We've been trying to get a homebrew item working correctly. They're essentially a cursed version of Gauntlets of Ogre Power that increase your STR but also lower your INT and WIS. Can get the STR increase working, but the lowering using the Set modifier doesn't seem to have any effect. Has anyone else had any experience with this? Pretty sure we're doing it right.
We also discovered someone else homebrewed a very similar item which we added to our Collection, and again it's only increasing STR not lowering the other stats. Hmmm
Yeah just been playing around and it seems that the Set modifier can only affect stats positively, not reduce them. I've also searched all regular items and homebrew ones and can't find any that successfully lower stats, probably why this has never come to light before. What can I say, our DM is unusually brutal!
Confirmed - I just checked by using the homebrew modifier of BONUS and selecting a stat (in my test I used INTELLIGENCE) and with a fixed value of -4 it makes no change to the character. With a value of 4, it correctly adds that 4 to the stat.
Thanks Stormknight! My understanding from looking at the official Gauntlets of Ogre Power is that the Fixed Value is the final stat figure (eg the Gauntlet has a 19 in that field). If the figure you enter in that field is greater than the player's current stat, it will be affected and raised to that fixed value. If the value is lower than the player's stat, it has no effect.
I'm starting to think this behaviour is intentional, because if a user already has 20 STR and puts on the gauntlets (STR 19), their STR should be unaffected. However, if that is the case then claiming it is a fixed value is of no use. There needs to be a way selecting whether it is a benefit if your actual stat is lower (for standard items), or a penalty if your stat is higher (for cursed items).
I am making(or rather trying to make) a magic item similar to things said above. In my case giving a + bonus to intimidation while lowering pursuasion but i cannot get it to work. Note that i am not going for set bonus, rather its a stackable one. The only way to make anything negative on a stat is Disadvantage, is that suppossed to be the only way?
But i cant get it to work, was this subject never solved?
If anyone else is reading this, I found a way around the set issue for scores. In this case, I have a cursed item that locks the strength stat to 7 while attuned. In order to get this to work on a character with 8 or higher strength, you have to add another step:
Modifier—>Bonus
Modifier Subtype—>Strength Score
Primary Stat -- STR
Fixed Value—> “-99”
The system will now see the strength stat as a 1, since 0 is not possible. Now, you can just add in the strength score stat set:
Modifier—>Set
Modifier Subtype—>Strength Stat
Primary Stat-- STR
Fixed Value—> “7”

Similar logic seems to apply to a stat bonus too (it can't be a penalty).
I've flagged this for staff to take a look at.

Is there an update to this?

Thankful for any respone,
Have a nice day.
Set, Bonus, and Stacking Bonus are three different Modifiers.
I just tested it on one of my homebrews and it worked for me so it should work for you too:
