I've seen this homebrew spell added to other characters in the campaign just fine so I'm not sure what might be the cause.
One of my players is getting a 500 error when trying to add a homebrew spell in my campaign. I've tested on other characters I made and other player's characters and it seems to work fine. It's just with this particular character. The spell shows as available (which it should) but hits an error page when clicking "learn". I have made my own character, same class, and everything and it adds just fine.
Thank you. You came with all of the relevant information right up front organized and labeled. You probably can’t tell but I’m a little misty-eyed with joy and gratitude. Thanks, and ty
Out of curiosity, how are either of those characters receiving the Bolts of Despair spell? From what I can tell that spell is only available to Shadow Sorcerers and Death Domain Clerics - how are the character(s) able to view/add it? Also, if possible can you re-add it to the successful test character (so I get a stronger idea of where the issue might be).
It's should also available to 3 homebrew wizard variants. The test and player character are the same wizard variant. (Latest Spell Version 5.5) But it won't show for them now...
I've looked at both character sheet --> Manage Spells --> Add Spells
-and-
Edit Character --> Class --> Spells --> Add Spell --> Learn
As an aside, I deleted it at one point thinking maybe something weird happened in caching cause it would never show the latest version. I made another spell with all of the changes on the initial spell creation: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/576100-shadow-strike-frostsword I have been able to add it successfully to both.
I was able to add it to both without problem. So if there is a way to see the code behind the 2 maybe there can be a comparison between them cause they should be near identical (maybe a damage dice change)
If you added the spell to those subclasses in the list of spell lists attached to the spell itself, then it should update that subclass’s spell list with the new version automatically. Actually, it just keeps adding the new ones on top of the old versions. If you look later by creating a copy of that homebrew for some reason, you realize that there are multiple versions of the same spell in their list, and no idea which is the correct version.
If you added the spell as part of a subclass feature, and then altered and republished the spell, then the problem is that the subclass features are looking for the old version of the spell which has been archived by the process of republishing that spell. You will need to go in and re-edit the subclass as well so it looks for the current version of the spell.
This is only one of the many reasons why I always recommend that people DON’T PUBLISH until after several months of thorough playtesting and editing are completed. make 1,000% sure it is done before publishing. And even then I recommend waiting another month just in case you find something else you never noticed before.
Basically, don’t publish things that aren’t absotively, posilutely ready. There are other good reasons besides the ones you have discovered as well. I wish you the best of luck.

I’m also having this issue
Has there been any investigation into the issue?

Definitely an odd case - but I'm glad to hear that you're able to add that spell to those characters!
