As a Ranger, you are proficient in weapons such as bows and swords. When you get to Ranger lvl 2, you begin to "develop hidden magical abilities" or whatever it is. So isn't a Ranger multiclassing Druid and Fighter, kind of?
A ranger is basically half-fighter, half-druid, just like a paladin is basically half-fighter, half-cleric.
There are some significant differences, however. Neither rangers nor paladins get Second Wind, Action Surge, Indomitable, or cantrips. Clerics don't get Divine Sense or Lay on Hands. Druids don't get Favored Enemy or Natural Explorer. Rangers don't get Wild Shape.

But would it be more valuable to your character to be a fighter/druid or a ranger, if you advance in the fighter/druid parallel to mortal/arcane in the ranger class?

You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.
It depends on what u want your character to be, I suppose. Rangers also have some very combat oriented spells that druids don't get, while druids have wildshape and ritual casting and lots more spells.
I think a fighter/druid would be loads of fun to play, just as rangers are. But they would be quite different in their abilities.
A few levels of Druid go a long way with Rangers. Just 3 levels can dramatically affect how quickly you attain 5th level spell and provides many complementary abilities with almost no sacrifice. Most of the archetype features are pretty weak for Ranger so the delay would hardly be noticed. And we don't need to mention the Ranger capstone ability...

The Ranger has always been a sort of hybrid class - primarily a fighter, with some rogue elements & spellcasting.
