Though we may not agree on exactly how to make Ranger better, at least we all agree that it could have been and should have been better.
I am extremely hopeful that the Variants get a second round soon or go to print. I believe it is the only way we will see an improvement in Ranger in this edition since they have already said that a revision is outside the realm of possibility.
as of now, the favoured enemy replacement is only level 1 right, it has no benefits at 6th and 14th level when you are supposed to improve favoured enemy, ether you choose new favoured enemy types even when you did not initially choose favoured enemy
also an enhancement to spellcasting just as potent as the palladings divine smite would be nice, i think maybe something like an extra bonus action exclusively for casting ranger spells during the first round of combat? comething along those lines, perhaps also preparing spells like the damm paladin

I think that as a community, it isn't our job to find ways to fix the Ranger, that's Wizards' job. It's our job to point out to Wizards something that is broken, or terrible, or OP, anything in general that needs fixing, and it is their job to fix it.
I think that they're aware that the Ranger is broken, that's what the point of the Revised Ranger and the Class Feature Variants for the Ranger was all about.
Can we agree now that Rangers suck, and Wizards of the Coast need to fix them?

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
I think we’ve already agreed that they “underperform” compared to other classes. We have even generally agreed on the major issues for the most part. We have since been happily debating the merits and flaws of the various fixes we might hope to see.

No, this at first level replaces all instances of Favored enemy, it instead scales of Wis instead of level, another inducement to max it out. And being able to cast Hunter’s Mark at 1st-level up to 5 times per day, for free, and without concentration so you can get to use all of those spells like Hail of Thorns, Ensnaring Strike, Lightning Arrow, etc. is as powerful as divine smite.

Favored Foe is a great ability. I also like Deft Explorer as well as the expanded spell list and Primal Awareness. Overall the Variant Ranger abilities are just what the class needed.

yes, but now level 6 is even worse like yes at least we get an GOOD abillity at level 6 with roving, that is fantastic, but we need something to compensate for the lack of new favoured enemies, even if that is not a verry strong feature, even if you choose to get favoured foe, you should still get a new favoured enemy at level 6 and another at level 14, especially since the foe slayer abillity at level 20 is directly tied to favoured enemy and litterally not work without the favoured enemy feature, (unless you want to say that favoured foe and favoured enemey are synonyms and that any target of hunter's mark cast without concentration you get that benefit towards, not RAW but might be argued).
I think that we should get rules that affect the travel pace rules like how natural explorer does it now, but it works for every single terrain as one of the choices for roving
that being said all of the class features for ranger are really amazing and like you said just what the ranger needed, but they can be a little better
Favored Foe.You can call on your bond with nature to mark a creature as your favored enemy for a time: you know the hunter's mark spell, and Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it. You can use it a certain number of times without expending a spell slot and without requiring concentration— a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. When you gain the Spellcasting feature at 2nd level, hunter's mark doesn't count against the number of ranger spells you know.
And honestly, the travel pace thing gives the DM options

You are an unsurpassed explorer and survivor. Choose one of the following benefits, and then choose another one at 6th and 10th level.
Canny. Choose one: Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Investigation, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival. You gain proficiency in the chosen skill if you don't already have it, and you can add double your proficiency bonus to ability checks using that skill. In addition, thanks to your extensive wandering, you are able to speak, read, and write two languages of your choice.
Roving.Your walking speed increases by 5, and you gain a climbing speed and a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
Tireless. As an action, you can give yourself a number of temporary hit points equal to 1d10 + your Wisdom modifier. You can use this special action a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. In addition, whenever you finish a short rest, your exhaustion level, if any, is decreased by 1.
huh, guess favoured foe does indeed still work. Neat, incredibly fantastic indeed
and the passive speed buff is great, but it has absolutely nothing to do with travel pace, by wich i mean the rules at page 181-182 of the players handbook as well as a bunch of pages in the dungeon masters guide that tells you how fast you travel per day out of combat and what you can do while travelling, roving is fantastic, but the only real benefit it gives in the context of those specific rules is the abillity to swim for longer without gaining exhaustion due to gaining an natural swimming speed. It is still and really really really cool abillity that makes you go oh so very very fast and makes an ranger/monk way more fun.
or did you highlight that becuase i mixwed up the names of deft explorer and roving?

So are we currently discussing how the class feature variants for rangers are too powerful or not powerful enough, or just discussing alternate abilities?

I like the changes, but I wish that Wizards would get over their fear of invalidating the PHB, and admit that they made a mistake, and just remake the class.

Amen to that. They could put out a small supplement that only contains the new Ranger (for those who already have a PHB) and then the next version of the PHB could contain the new version (for new players and AL legality, although I don't really care much about that last bit).

They tried that, they even gave it out for free with an apology. It was called The Revised Ranger. It was a little overtuned, and so many people hated it so hard they pulled the plug.

If they put the spells and features spread out through the various Adventure books into the "PHB2" a long with the revised Ranger class and some Variant class abilities and stuff, it would make it more appealing.

They tried that in 4e, and people hate 4e, so I doubt that there will ever be a PHB 2

Revised Ranger is R.I.P., all attempts to resurrect it have failed, the Variant is the Reincarnation I suppose. I think all of that stuff is playtest for Xanathar’s 2.
