Yass!!! It could be the party mascot and we could call ourselves “Octopus Inc.”
Now I have the urge to play as a Sea Elf Beast Master with an Octopus Pet, along with a Triton Lurker in the Deep Chainlock (for aquatic familiar), a Simic Hybrid Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, and Locathah Storm Herald (sea) Barbarian.
Octopus Inc. 🐙 We have our tentacles in everything.
Catch phrase "Sea you later."

so the simic hybrid has tentacles too i assume, plus deep sea warlock for extra tentacles and grasping vine for even more tentacles?
anyways yeah a lot of aquatic beasts have an grapple that restrains victims, so defenetly an beast of water should have it, right? i even think the water elemental has it

Rangers aren't that bad, it is just people's opinions. Mostly it is min/maxers who think this. Revised ranger is way too far from the original idea. Rangers aren't meant to be the ultimate fighter. They are meant to be martial druids, those who can wield magic as well as a bow. Fey wanderer is amazing. But people get upset about it because it is 'close to horizon walker'. It really isn't the same. Fey wanderers are the ultimate skirmishers. Horizon walkers are all about one powerful attack. People always dislike a brilliant subclass, then say there are no good subclasses. That is the annoying thing about min/maxers. Rangers aren't bad. People's opinions of them and.
i have never heard a single person ever complain about the fey wanderer, i personally feel that subclasses without the third attack at level 11 are a little weaker but hey it is cool that rangers now get smite and a bunch of fun enchantment / mind altering effects to play arround with a little, and like what the heck fey wanderer and horizon walker could not be further from eachother like one is an straight up space cop and another is an embodiment of the capricious fey

beast masters can make two attacks with their beast and one attack themselves, hunter ranger can make one attack against all creatures within an area, once per turn an gloom stalker can make another attack if he or she misses, and the horizon walker can make three attacks as long as each attack is against a diffrent target and also horizons get to teleport before or after each attack, the only subclasses who can not at least potentiall make more than two attacks per turn is monster hunter and fey wanderer

I see the confusion- all of those abilities are distinctive from the Extra Attack ability. Also, I've never been terribly enamored of abilities that give you extra attacks if you target multiple foes- my experience is that a lot of damage to a single enemy is generally superior than doing a little damage to a lot of enemies.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
on of the reasons why beast master is one of the least terrible subclasses, one attack for you and two attacks for yourself and the beast can deal some pretty decent damage, even sometimes much more damage in a single attack than what an fighter or barbarian or you can deal in a single attack

Really, I always thought that the Beast Master was the worst subclass in all of D&D.

It is. Animal companions are very limited in what they can actually do in combat. Making the subclass powerful requires the use of specific non-core animals as companions, which many GMs may not allow and also which may not be appropriate to some settings (like using a Giant Venomous Snake in Icewind Dale).

My 5th level barbarian deals an average of 24 (2d6+18) points of damage per attack. If she gets to bonus action attack during the round, she is dealing 72 points of damage. What level Beast Master do you need to be to get that kind of damage?

Forget that. How the hell do they keep that sucker alive long enough to hit anything?!? As soon as a feckin’ bear or something starts closing in on a villain that thing is burnt toast. Heck, usually the first AoE takes out a companion. WTF?!? They got that thing on combat stimulants or something?!?

And it is hard to get them back. What do you do if you're in a dungeon? Or another plane of existence? Or you are in a blasted wasteland? Or in Wildspace or the Phlogiston (for Spelljammer players)?
It really sucks if you're the Beast Master, and you have a Battle Smith in the party, and both of your pets die, but the Battle Smith just gets to revive them as many times as they want, and the Beast Master has to wait till they leave the place that they're in to get to some woodlands or plains.

first of all, incredebly curious as to how the **** you have an +18 to damage, when strength should at this point give you +4 and rage bonus damage is +2 that should only be like 2d6 +6, like how many unborn children did you sacrofice to Yeenoghu to unlock this level of power at level 5? second would not bonus action extra attack mean you gain one level of exhaustion after the combat? third consider an giant poisonous snake, it has an +8 to hit modifier due to reasons at level 3, and does 1d4 + 6 damage on a hit. On top of that the target must make an constution saving throw or take 3d6 + 2 damage, half as much on a sucessful save, even if the target suceeds that is about an average of 14 damage assuming the target has no special immunities or resistances, that may be ten points less damage than your barbarian but i am still convinced your barbarian is on some kind of performance enchancing drug and that is way more than normal barbarians, even if the target manages to suceed on their saving throw. As your proficiency bonus rises, always the level after abillity score increases, the beasts AC, to hit and damage rolls all increas by one, so it becomes 1d4 + 7 and 3d6 + 3 at 5th level
There are of course other pretty decent damage dealers among CR 1/4th beasts, the fastieth and the dimetron for example, but the giant poisonous snake is the prime example

but then you would have an horrible to hit modifier?
I guess one could argue that a barbarian will attack recklessly, and advantage more or less equals +5 to hit, so you basically get +10 damage vs eneemies have advantage against you. Not sure I find that a great trade though.
but then you would have an horrible to hit modifier?
Great Weapon Master is one of the most popular feats in 5e for a reason.
With GWM I drop to +4 to hit, but with Reckless attack giving me advantage with every attack, I very rarely miss. Sure they have advantage to hit me, but while raging I have effectively double the Hit Points (Bear Totem).
As for the 3rd attack, If I crit or reduce a target to 0 hit, I get a bonus action attack. No exhaustion.
Now the problem with using a Giant Poisonous Snake is the Poison damage becomes less and less effective as you level up. Constitution tend to be one of the better saves for most higher CR creatures and the are many that are resistant to poison or are just out right immune. At lower levels it is pretty good to be sure, but it has all the same issues that Beast Master Companions have. The higher you get in level, the more vulnerable and useless it becomes. A the Ranger themselves gets better and better as they level and using one of their attacks on their pet becomes less and less appealing.

Exactly what subclasses for any class get a third attack at level 11? As far as I'm aware, that's a feature exclusive to fighters.

Greatsword, +2, + Great Weapon Master turns your 2d6+6 into 2d6+18. With 5th-level Extra Attack that averages 50 damage/turn.
