I believe I've seen people mention using these kinds of things solutions before. Have anyone actually done this in a game.. It seems like an exploit a DM would strike down fairly quickly.. I'm not trying to be a party pooper or anything.. I just can't imagine having a bag of bugs to squash in order to fuel your spooky phantom powers is gonna hold up in the long run.
The trinkets are magically created and you can have only so many (proficiency bonus) so a bag full to the brim of little trinkets is just not going to happen.
when a creature you can see dies within 30 feet of you, you can open your free hand and cause a Tiny trinket to appear there, a soul trinket. The DM determines the trinket’s form or has you roll on the Trinkets table in the Player’s Handbook to generate it.
You can have a maximum number of soul trinkets equal to your proficiency bonus, and you can’t create one while at your maximum. You can use soul trinkets in the following ways:

The point is a lot of the later features can be reused by the destruction of said trinkets. So having creatures on hand to replenish those abilities/trinkets is a good thing

Edit: I just got what you were doing. Sorry about that. That seems like a good idea.
Cue my "Darkest Dungeon" Grave Robber character whose motto is "Trinkets & Baubles!"
When you look at all the trinkets & gothic trinkets available in 5th Edition...yeah, it's pretty sweet.
At first I was worried that "Wails from the Grave" was not going to be useable very often...but the endless chain of "destroy Soul Trinket / absorb soul" seems VERY efficient.
Let's face it: Rogues have "Sneak Attack". Phantom Rogues can dish out Sneak Attack to two targets. Someone is going to die; and that Phantom Rogue is going to get that trinket back.
One of my favorite new subclasses from Tasha's Cauldron.
The caterpillar idea is clever but as a DM I'd "squash" it real quick
Or maybe even toy with the idea that the soul trinket of a caterpillar isn't worth much at all, maybe even a detriment...?
This is definitely something that should get cleared up between the player and the DC OOC / session 0 etc
yeah. It seems like a good time to implement the god ole "insignificant things like bugs don't have souls" or "Not all souls are created equal" tropes as a dm.

Maybe also a tap to the forward assist for trying to game things like that and an annoyed look that can only be cleansed by a generous offering of Mountain Dew and Doritos.
based on the terminology of creature, as raw, you can’t crush a bug and it work. you’d have to kill a creature as defined in the books. you could kill a tiny creature but those are still relative big, since 4 of them can still fit in a 5ft square. frog, seahorse or rat is still your best bet to carry around.

RAW, caterpillars are creatures. There's no rule anywhere saying that the only creatures that exist are the ones with a statblock in a book.
The issue with this is that you need to use your reaction to make the soul trinket when somebody dies within 30ft of you. If you plan on frequently killing the caterpillars, then say goodbye to uncanny dodges during those turns
Wrong, Jeremy Crawford straight up explained what’s considered a creature. “The introduction to the Monster Manual lists the variety of beings that count as creatures, organized by type. ”
According to RAW in Tasha, Phantom rogue gets a trinkets whenever a creature dies within 30 feet.
I'm gonna be keeping a small canister of caterpillars in my pocket; To crush/kill/eat to get easy access to those soul trinkets
Flashback to 3e "bag of rats"

Well 2 things:
1. You do have a limit(prof. bonus) and probably will not be replenishing them in combat(action + reaction)
2. You would also not get anything from the third use of trinkets because what are the caterpillars going to know?
Bravo, you found a loophole and won D&D!
As a DM, I would personally set a minimum intelligence score for a creature to be able to create a soul trinket.
Same here, like i just had that idea

I'd say something with a CR would be required. I'm sure there are other spells/abilities that would break things if the same method was used.
