I was wondering if it is possible to make a build or a way of playing an Illusionists in a way of drawing out their inner nightmares and fears and using them to kill as a player character?
I feel like illusionists are way too situational since they can be rendered very useless if the DM isn't very open minded about them and their restrictions. Hope you guys can give me some insight into making a potential one that works in a regular adventuring party who goes around doing adventurers stuff.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Several Illusion school spells already do that. Phantasmal Force, Phantasmal Killer, and Weird are all about forcing others into fear situations that exist only in their own minds while also doing psychic damage to them.
Although they are 5th and 6th level spells, don't forget the Dream and Mental Prison spells, if you want a way to absolutely mess with people, spy on their dreams and use your illusions to bring their sub conscious fears to life.
Its also worth having a list of illusions to use against or to aid specific "classes" so you may create illusions that look like ghosts, shadows and other incorporeal undead to mess with clerics and paladins trying to turn/control undead; sound based illusions that make a bards or performers music sound out of tune or dubs over their voice, need to hide in a hurry? crouch down in an alleyway and create a silent illusion of a barrel over yourself or a wall that looks like the alleyway is a dead end. Its a lot harder for a DM to say their NPC's/Monsters see through your illusions when the illusions are either fairly normal in appearance or an expected phenomena.
It might be worth asking the DM if you can add some cosmetic effects to your spell casting, maybe your misty step or dimension door looks like you disperse into a pool of blood and seeps into the ground instead of walking through a doorway, maybe your firebolt looks like a tiny flaming skull and emits a scream as it flies through the air or you hold person looks like tentacles ripping up out the ground to grasp the target. To sweeten the deal you could offer to pay a little bit more, say between +25% and +100% more to scribe spells into you spell book, to reflect a little bit of tinkering on the arcane formula, not changing the school of magic, just adding the cosmetic twist tot he appearance.
