I think potent cantrip would be fine if there were just a couple more damage-dealing evocation cantrips that went off saving throws rather than attack rolls added to the wizard list. Thunderclap and Frostbite don't really cut it.
You aren't limited to only Evocation cantrips.
Any cantrip that forces a saving throw and does damage will qualify.

Being an evoker doesn't mean you're limited to only evocation spells - it just means you're better with them than other non-evoker wizards.
Have non-evoker save cantrip, and an attack evoker cantrip. You'll be dishing decent damage.

yes but at the same time, flavour wise it is weird that an evocation wizard, one who is mastering the art of evocation, of raw arcane energy, would prever to cast spells dealing with conjuring things from elsewhere or even thin air, or to deal with the powers over live and death.
I know this sounds more like a war wizard or eldrich knight thing, but how about something akin to this for a feature "if you use your action to dash, disengage or doge, you may use your bonus action to cast a cantrip"

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
All the wizard sub-classes are extremely lacking when compared to the sub-classes of other classes, sorcerers, warlocks clerics and druids are significantly better blasters.
Bull.
The problem is you think Wizards are blasters. They are not. Instead, Wizards are generalists that have some of the best command and control spells.
Diviner Wizard, Abjurer Wizard, and Chrono Wizard are all in the top 6 subclasses.

if measuring purely by evil and how much it changes the fighting style of the class, necromancy is also pretty high up there in terms of really really good subclasses, motivating you to use powerful minions to fight on your behalf and to finish of weak opponents, treating hit points as a resource with life transference, while also undead thralls making them the go to necromancy subclass (even if divine soul has some unique advantages). also why is there so much empty space in your post my dude?

I'm aware of that, but it feels off for an evoker to be relying on Toll the Dead or Acid Splash.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
