The built-in list of weapons is all well and good, but it can feel contraining at times. For example if I wan't to use the UA Spear Mastery feat, there is NO way to change the weapon die of the spear. If I wan't to make a chain-axe that has a 15ft reach, the best I can do is a magic item with a custom action.
Can Anyone on the dndbeyond team comment on if this is being considered or if it's possible? I've searched through for other mentions and havent found anything.
Hi there! Not a D&D Beyond team member here, but I can at least attest that this is a frequent request of which the team members are well-aware. Many past Dev Updates have mentioned a future homebrew system overhaul (no ETA, as per usual), and one could assume that in the event of such an overhaul, this request would be seriously considered. We'll just have to wait to see what happens with that in the future!
Before WotC had basically precluded any introduction of new base equipment “RAW.” That effectively tied DDB’s metaphorical hands as it were. But WotC has since relaxed on that position, so now it’s at least a potential possibility.
It's not like you're going to use it every campaign for every character so you can always just use Custom Items and Custom Actions on the sheet. Same effect.

WotC? Absolutely. In fact, their “strange choices” (as you so politely phrased it), and their forcing those “strange choices” into DDB is the root cause of at least 60% of everything that everyone complains at DDB about. If WotC had stuck to designing games and let the web developers worry about how to implement that stuff digitally things would have worked better around here from the start. (Those meddling kids Hasbro executives and their dog lawyers.)

Not quite, sure I can take a rapier, change the damage type to slashing and call it a “saber;” or add finesse to a club and call it “nunchaku.”
But this damned system won’t let me convert all d12 weapons to 4d4 and all 2d6 weapons to 2d8, change longswords to 2d4/2d6, upgrade all of those d10 Polearms to 1d12, and then stick a d10 arming sword in the middle. Because I would totally do that, and I would use all of it in every campaign I DM. I think that would be the best, most practical solution to adjust for the ingrained disparity between Dex Vs. Str based builds. (I would also adjust stuff like Brutal Critical, Savage Attacks, and Orcish Fury to include all at the weapons’ damage dice, not just one of them.) And that doesn’t include a plethora of Musical Instruments, a handful of Tool Sets, and several other various nonmagical “potions,” “poisons,” and “adventuring gear” that I would also add to the general mix for folks in campaigns I DM.
Yeah, actually there’s quite a bit of equipment I would create for “every session” use.
If your weapon happens to share all the same qualities as something pre-existing, you can just add that item and rename it directly. That's how I got a +1 magic belaying pin (actually club) my character could actually wield in combat. That should also work for the musical instruments and other generic adventuring gear items with no in-game stats

Fair enough, I guess.
