Well i did my Master tier trial. Ive been playing D&D for 6 months. I have inspiration to learn how to DM and run campaigns online. I was immediately discouraged when the master tier list didn't include any of the newer source books XGTE & TCOE. I tried to make one character then gave up when i had to pay for a double dip in my wallet for books i already own.
In my brief tour I didn't see any direct tutorials how to set up a campaign, pick a map, invite players. I annoyed by all the drop down ribbons that kept distracting me from a direct path on how to set up a campaign. Call me dumb, call me whatever. The website is far to messy for my taste as new player to navigate.
I'm considering other 3rd party options that may be better for setting up my own VTT and to figure out how to overlay interfaces and maps and invite other players. This is what I thought i was getting with a subscription, maybe its all there but It never happened because i was quickly overwhelmed and discouraged when I couldn't even make a character sheet with features from newer sourcebooks.
I see buncha kickstarters for other TTRPG's. If I was WOTC, I'd be worried. One would hope before the 2024 books come out, they'll do a pass on this site. Make sure a brand new player can quickly navigate everything they need to make a character sheet and set up a game. Declutter the constant pop up ribbons that seem to only ping pong you around the site and learn nothing.

I can tell you that foundry, roll20, demiplane, etc. all take the same amount of work with less support resources. I say this as a person who uses multiple 3rd party options for in person and virtual play instead of the dndbeyond options. But they all take a lot of work and general moxie to get running well for you. You will not escape having to google, join discords, ask questions, etc. for any of the other options.

i found Beyond pretty straightforward on how to use all its features as a DM. ANd ya, jst like any digital tabletop you will have to buy the digital books on that platform if they utilize the rulesset in its function, You are not jsut buying a digital verion of the book, you are buying the ability to have the rules and information intergrated into a system and toolset used to make characters and run the game.
It may not be your thing but so far, it is the best and least complicated one I have used, though we will see how Demiplane does when it releases 5e but their Pathfinder is kind of mid. I have heard good things about Alchemy though. Roll20 is, in my opinion, terrible. I would rather just use DDB, Discord, and Owlbear rather than ever touch Roll20 again, though now that Maps is here, I probably don't even need Owlbear.

The good thing is that they are taking away things now, so soon it will be less confusing because there won't be anything left to use/do.
