Personally, I find the homebrewing system infuriating! Many of the boxes have odd labels and it takes a bit of research to figure out what they do. Also, I can't for the life of me find a way to make a homebrew weapon or homebrew piece of equipment. I feel like it shouldn't be that hard to take a blank template and make a grappling arrow, or a custom firearm!
For example, I want to make a firearm called a "Clockshot". I would like to mark it as a firearm so it works with proficiencies on the character sheets, I would like to put the range of 30/60 on it, I want the damage die to be 1d8, and I want a -1 modifier to hit with it. I can't do that with current homebrewing tools. (I would also love to add a Reload property of 2 on it, but I understand that might be a bit more niche.) So far, I can make a magic weapon, but I can't change the range from the base weapon and it is a nightmare trying to get the description to not include information from the base weapon. A feat can add the action, but won't let me customize the hit penalty and it doesn't work with proficiency.
Another example, I want to add a "grapple arrow" as an item for players in any of my campaigns. I want it to be a nonmagical arrow with a description of the spring-loaded hook, and I want to add a custom range. Doesn't work. Even if I can't add a max range, I'd be satisfied with an option to make a description and addable item as equipment.
A final example. In my homebrew world, players need a "sun dome" to cover themselves in sandstorms in a certain region. Right now, my players need to add a custom item every time they buy one, and not all of them are very tech-savvy. It would save us a lot of game time if I could just make this item with a description and price via homebrew for them to access.
So, to summarize, PLEASE ADD HOMEBREW EQUIPMENT!!!! I am much more tech-savvy than my players, and it would be SO nice to just have them find premade equipment I make like other homebrew.
100% agree with this. Very well put of 3 very good examples of things I could say "Are you the DM? Hack and slash you're way through feats, magic items, and character sheet customization to do what you want."
Or provide us with a better tool.
Like why are we limited to the weapon properties from the basic rules? Why can't we access the DMG's firearm weapon properties? Why isn't there an option to change a ranged weapon to melee and vice versa?
You have to jump through so many hoops to make something as professional as possible. Why do I need this note in a 2d8 laser sword?
This item adds proficiency with Firearms, this only applies to the weaveblade. This weapon will show up on your character sheet as a ranged weapon. This is considered a melee weapon with a reach of 5 ft. Ignore all references to Ammunition, Firearms, Range, or Reloading. Ignore everything after this point.
I'm so obsessive over my creations, I add extra notes to make the description page accurate.
So it comes out with all the Notes correct:
The 3rd party created homebrewBad News is the only 2d12 weapon available as a base weapon and if you want to make a 2d12 weapon, you have to use this one. And it has it's own weapon properties that show up on the character sheet and none of the DMG or Exandria firearm properties are available
100% support everything discussed here. Would really be nice to be able to create homebrew equipment that is not a "Magic Item." Additionally, there are several issues with creating Homebrew Magic Items, especially when dealing with the properties surrounding firearms, both from the DMG and Exandria.
