I had the same issue when trying to upload using the phone app. I circumvented this by going to dnd beyond in my browser (chrome) and going to my characters and editing through there. Make sure your browser has permission to access your system storage. On a phone you can do this in your settings via app permissions. It can be a bit more complicated on mac or PC but you should be able to enable this by opening your browser settings. Hope this helps. :)
Note to app programmers: The D&D Beyond app (at least for android) does not allow you to give it any permissions in settings. I suspect this to be the root of the problem. Coming from a budding android app developer.
I think I finally figured it out! You can't upload images that have transparency! I had a jpg from google images but once I saved it again as another jpg with another name, it warned me about losing the transparency, and it worked! Strange that it didn't initially work considering jpgs don't have transparency. Must have thought it did.
I'm having similar problems. At first I got an API call error. So I resized down to 150x150px (jpg). The image previewed fine at the larger size and the 150x150 size. Now when I set the smaller image, I just get a black box. Updating or retrying doesn't fix the problem.
Ok, so I cleared my chrome cache for dndbeyond.com following the instructions in that thread. It logged me out, so I logged back in. I saw that the image was still black, so I re-uploaded the image and it worked. Problem fixed.
Thank you!

Hello there rylanvanduyvendyk,
Are the image/s under 3Mb, and about 150x150?
-- Arms are for hugging The Dandy Warhols --
yes they are, they are png's don't know much about image properties should it be a JPEG
Changing them to JPEG format should help.

It won't even open the file options for me. When i click choose file (mobile or laptop) nothing happens.

Can you post links to the characters where it's not working and you uploaded an image?
