I am using JPG files and no matter if I try the small or large Avatar it fails. I just upgraded to master tier to use my monsters in the new maps but I am unable to use images so that I can see them when using tokens. Ive tried uploading them both at once and one at a time. I also save immediately afterward and nothing just says no image chosen after each save. Please help if you know a fix.
I was curious about this myself so I just tested on my end with success. First, when you're in Maps, are you able to see the tokens for your homebrew monsters at all? I can add mine to the map even if I have no image saved to the statblock. If so, can you create a new homebrew monster from scratch. Just a basic goblin will do. Save the monster, then once saved, try an image upload for the avatars and let me know how that goes.

I'm having the same issue. what file type does it need to be? I created a sword and uploaded a photo, but since then I have edited the item and now have a different photo I want to use. I try uploading but it never saves. I have even tried making a whole new weapon but the photo still wont upload. I also checked and the old photo and the new one are both .jpg. the file I was able to upload is 740 kb and the file I want to upload but can't is 307 kb.
I had this issue when I was downloading images that came in as .webp and just saving them as .jpg. When I went through a webp to jpg converter first, those images worked. Not sure if this is the same thing for you but something to try.
Hopping on this old thread because no other comment has solved the problem until now. The issue was resaving images from webp to jpg. For whatever reason Beyond just doesn't like it. I used a free converter and it worked without issue.
So, when you find the art you want to use, save it the default way and don't change the file type. (It'll save as a webp). Then upload it to a converter. I used Cloud Convert because it was the first link and was free. It'll convert it to a jpg. Then that new image will upload fine.
Thanks for the help and I hope more people find this thread!
