I suppose this is a known issue, but I post it just in case is not.
When you have a character in character creation and you do a short rest, it doesn't get back any spell slot or hit points if you choose the option of rolling hit dice.
When you take a short rest, you choose how many Hit Dice to regain and need to roll dice for how many hit points you regain, then update the character sheet.
A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character's maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character's Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll.
It doesn't have an integrated dice roller, so you have to roll your hit dice and change your HP yourself. As for spell slots, pact magic slots recover as they should, but the wizard's and land druid's recoveries require you to choose which slots to recover.
I'm not sure, I have a character lacking 8 hp (at level one), I press short rest, tick the box to roll 1 hit dice, confirm the short rest and nothing happens.
Sure, what you are doing is correct. You have informed the character sheet that you have used 1 HD, so it can track that for you.
You still need to roll the die and increase your hit points yourself though and that is by design.
If you are, for example, a Fighter and have 1d10 for your hit dice, you roll 1d10 and add your con bonus (see rules I linked and pasted above from the rulebook).
I undestood that the character creation tool was supposed to do the healing automatically, so, if it's not a bug, there is nothing more to discuss here.
It DOES have an integrated dice roller though, when you click on the damage for a spell for example it will roll the dice for you. It totally COULD roll the HD and apply the healing for you. (and I don't see why it wouldn't)

I an integrated dice roller exists now; it didn't when this thread was started (over a year ago). and the dice roller is still in beta. I'm sure rolling HD is on the list of things they want to do with the dice roller, but I don't know how long it will take them to get to it.
Ah, good point! We are about to start our first campaign using the character builder (didn't have the digital books previously), so I was confused by this as well, until I saw this thread.
I hope you are all doing well. Thanks for having me.
The short rest HP mechanic confused me and the 3 other (new) players of my party as well.
This post did not pop up on regular internet search, but another thread from 2017/2018 did. Which also appears to be before the (above mentioned) integrated dice roller, but a new player (like me) might not know that. D&D Bug support
For me it initially also appeared to be a bug and not by design. As long rest did add HP and short rest does not state it does not and is just a helper and appears to be able to add HP as well. But now I know it is working as designed.
Never the less I'm amazed at how easy most things work.
If it is by design that it doesn’t roll the dice, then it should say so, instead of telling you: “All relevant abilities have been reset” - when it knows they have not.
The instructions and dialog need to change to tell you what the code will do and what you need to do.
that is not a costly update of debugging. It’s just a matter of pasting in the correct text to be displayed.
No reason why the Short Rest interface can't apply the Short Rest healing to HP.
Actually, it can now. To do so:
tap “short rest”
make sure “Automatically apply healing with dice result” is checked
Mark the number of hit dice you want to use
tap the dice notation (e.g. d10+2) that appears between the hit die counter and the “take short rest” button. (It only appears if you have tapped on one or more hit die boxes)
tap the “take short resto button when it changes to “confirm” tap it again
If you specify what you are doing and how, we can see where you are going wrong and advise accordingly.

Ok, thanks.

Long rests will restore HP and spell slots automatically.
The character sheet just doesn't automate choices and variables.
It DOES have an integrated dice roller though, when you click on the damage for a spell for example it will roll the dice for you. It totally COULD roll the HD and apply the healing for you. (and I don't see why it wouldn't)

This caused a lot of confusion for my players as well. Hope they will add automatic healing when the hit dice are selected.

Just tested this out and it worked, thanks!
Still not working for me.
