I briefly turned on content sharing on my account so my players could create some characters, but then turned it off so they wouldn't see the content of my modules. The problem is, all of them can see it and download the full modules on the Beyond app and read them if they like. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.
Has anyone else in the campaign turned sharing on using their own Master subscription? If you look on the My Campaigns page, does it show a note like this?
Another option: Do you have multiple campaigns where you have turned on sharing? If you turned it off in one location, but have sharing enabled elsewhere, if any of those people from Campaign 1 (no sharing) are also in Campaign 2 (sharing) they will have access the compendium content on the website and app.
Hi Mellie - another DM has shared content in his campaigns with his subscription, but he never even had a character in the single campaign I created (I only had one created, so I'm not sharing content in any other of my campaigns - I don't have any.) I went so far as to delete the campaign entirely and he can still download and read my purchased modules (he doesn't own any modules) in the Beyond app. So right now, I have no campaigns, but they're still able to access the content. I'm going to have one of them check and see if they can still access the content on the website. I'll update when I hear back from them. Thanks for your help!
I just checked with two of my friends - they can still access the content on the Beyond website even though I have no campaigns anymore. Any ideas? Thanks!
Yes, I am. I guess I'm wondering now whether sharing content means that once I share it, I can't ever revoke it afterward? He doesn't own any modules, but he's been able to access mine, even though he didn't have a character in my campaign.
So to me, it seems like this is how it works.
I create a campaign, send an invite to 2 players (let's call them Bill and Ted) and share my content.
After Bill and Ted create their characters, I turn off content sharing. They can still see my content.
I delete the campaign. They still have access to my content.
The other DM (let's call him Hank) is sharing HIS content in one of his campaigns in which I have a PC.
Even though Hank never had a character in my campaign, and I have now deleted said campaign, can see and access my content for some reason.
Is this the way content sharing is meant to work? I know you're working on selective content sharing (which is way more important to me than the encounter builder or anything else, for that matter, but I digress...), but I don't know how I can possibly purchase another module from Beyond if this is the way it works. Am I missing something here?
Are you in any other campaigns (as a player or DM) with these other people, and if so, is content sharing enabled (either by you or someone else) in those campaigns.
The way master tier content sharing works is that it effectively pools all of the books together that the players and DM of a campaign have access too. And it only needs to be activated by one person.
It sounds like the sharing is occurring through the other DM's campaign. He has sharing turned on from what I understand-- That means that everyone in that campaign can access all content from all users in that campaign, including your paid content because you are a player in that campaign.
Sharing is not limited to ONLY the person with a Master Tier subscription-- This way, it's easier for groups to split up purchases of content and subscriptions to reduce costs of using D&D Beyond with your group.
So my content is automatically shared if I'm in a campaign where someone else has content sharing turned on. I think I understand it now.
I really hope Beyond solves this issue soon, because it's becoming a real problem. I feel like I should be able to select which content I'd like to share, no matter whose campaign I happen to be in, but that's in the works, correct?
Mellie and Houligan - thanks for your help in this - I really appreciate it. I don't have to like it, but at least I understand it now. :-D
I totally agree, Houligan. It's a great idea, but I just wish toggles were in place before it was rolled out. No DM wants their players to have access to the module. Even if your players aren't the type to spoil things for themselves, it's too easy to click on something by accident if the content is accessible. I'm looking forward to a fix, but I'm going to have to hold off purchasing any modules for now, unfortunately.
I dont think it is that hard to just NOT read the modules you are a player in. I have the legendary bundle and -aside from magic items- I haven't read anything from adventures I don't intend to run, and the same is true for the other members of my group.
If a player has decided they are going to cheat and metagame, they can find the adventure info one way or another.
I think you’re right in the abstract, but here’s where it falls apart. For instance, we have another DM, so our content is mutually shared.
So let’s say he’s looking for some magic items to add to his campaign. Unfortunately, since I’m sharing all of my modules, when he starts searching for weapons with certain attributes, he is inevitably going to see weapons that are in DoMM or Dragon Heist. He can’t unsee what he’s seen, and where it comes from is right there in the search box. So, in some ways, he’s crippled. He doesn’t want to spoil anything, but whether he’s searching for monsters, weapons, et al, he’s destined to spoil something.
I'm not trying to be argumentative. I’m aggravated because it’s already happened 3 times in my Dragon Heist campaign, and my players are not meta gamers or looking for spoilers. I LIKE Beyond. I would just like it if adding this feature was their number one priority is all.

I believe toggles are in the works for selecting what content gets shared when.
At least with the current system, the most content gets shared for the least cost, which I think is a nice gesture on D&D Beyond's part.
