SO, D&D BEYOND; what is up with character sharing. We all use the your character generator (a nice piece of work) but as a DM I stil can not share characters with my players. I really want the ability to share characters that I create for my players with them: "here is the stripped down 4th level Bard that I generated for you. Go and customize it and we will see you at the table next Sunday".
Instead, I have to send them an email (event though they also have a D&D account) with an attached pdf (that I saved outside of D&D Beyond) and then my players individually have to manually enter the character back into the D&D Beyond character generator via their own D&D Beyond accounts.
COME ON! Cant you please give us this much requested tool?

Note that the original post is a year and a half old. Things have changed, and this is now possible. Here’s how you do it:
- create a campaign here (or have someone else in your group—whoever will be the DM—do so)
- add the character you created to the campaign
-unassign the character
-send friend campaign link (or have campaign owner do so)
I can't add an existing character to a new campaign. I can create a new one. But that would mean I have to start over and build again from scratch. Am I missing something? How can we add an existing character to a new campaign.

Is your existing character part of another campaign? A character can only be part of one campaign. If not, you should be able to add it to the campaign. when you click on the campaign link, and get to the page to choose a character, do you see a list of your existing characters? if so, click on the one you want to add, then scroll down to the end of your character list and click the "join with this character" button.
If the player went to their group's campaign page and Claimed an Unassigned character, yes, the character is theirs, to edit as they wish. (I've done it plenty myself to help new players.)

If you create a character(s) in D&D Beyond and want to share them in a campaign with other people you need to do the following.
Create campaign and create characters there unassigned or if you have created the characters outside of campaign do this:
There will be a "joinable link" you yourself click that and join as every character you have made, making sure to unassign yourself from them each time redoing the link each time. Once all potential characters are loaded in to the campaign and are unassigned from the DM; send the link to your friends and the premade characters should show up as options for them to join as.
Hope this cleared up somethings for some of ya'll.
I, unfortunately, will have to miss a session. How can I share my character with another for now, but remove it after?
I would suggest that you make a copy of the character, add the copy of the character to the campaign, and unassign the character. Doing it this way, you would have to manually update your original after the session you missed.
Another option: Make a copy, but keep it, uanassign your character in the campaign. Then, once the session is over, ask the other play to unassign it again so you can claim it. In this case, the copy is a backup in case there are problems with the other player unassigning it to return to you.
Is it possible to share characters without having to make a new campaign?
I don't know what you mean by "share characters."
Content sharing (that is sharing purchased content like races, sub-classes, spells, magic items, etc.) must happen within campaigns. But it is not actually possible for two people to share the same character.

Are they able to edit the sheet?

I’m also having trouble with this step. I can’t see a list of existing characters to add to my campaign, I can only create new ones.
What do you see when you go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/my-characters ?

Use the join campaign link (copy and paste into address bar).
Can the same happen in the other direction? As in, can a player share their character sheet with me, the DM, to then edit for myself?
If their character has joined your campaign on DDB, then you can Edit their character.

To expand on what naruhoodie has correctly stated, a DM effectively has admin level privileges over all PCs in their DDB campaigns.
