To clarify, you have to go to the link in order to add your own characters. It's kind of counter intuitive, you'd think you could just click "add to campaign" on "my characters" but you have to follow your own link.
I don't understand how it works. I made a campaign, I saw the link, but how do you send a like to players? Can you please, step by step, teach me how to do this. I am not good at tech stuff.
Just send that link, with email, text message, post it in chat or on a forum, and people that click that link will be asked to import or create a character for that campaign. :) Hope this helps!
As others have said, the current way to add your own characters to your campaign is counterintuitive. Please give us an option to directly add a character from My Characters, and while viewing each character.

I was trying to figure this out myself. Thanks for the help! This is definitely not intuitive. I thought I could just go to My Characters and hit add to campaign, or vice versa.
Agreed - I have a bunch of new players, who have played D&D here and there - but I made their characters on the site, so I can manage everything for them. So being able to add them into my own campaign easily would be nice.
Had to google this because it didn't make logical sense why I couldn't easily add an already created character to my own campaign. It is nice that you can create unassigned characters that get automatically added to the campaign. But yes. +1 to making it easier to add already created characters.
Replying to this to give it a bump, cause I think it would be a great feature, though I can see why logistically it would be a pain.
Most notably because the characters themselves are almost completely attached to the user who created them and not the campaign they're in, which would be troublesome if someone had a single character they wanted in multiple campaigns.
This topic needs to be looked at again. Using DDB at a LGS is great. But we need it to be more Fluid so DM's can create new campaigns and easily add charaters to them or drop them out. It would be great to have a similar system to R20's character vault. Especially for AL players at their LGS. (or even VTT's but I think the DDB importing to R20 or FG has all but been abandoned).
Bumping again. This is literally just a button that links to the link they already have on the page. Should take about 30 min to implament, no joke. EDIT: I actually had to find this answer through a Google search. Such a basic function. Make characters. Make campaigns. Put characters in campaigns. How is this not a thing yet?
That pretty much covers it.
To join a campaign you need the link from the campaign creator.
Go to the campaign link -- just having the link and going to it gives you the option to join this campaign.

worked, thanks!

Yeah, creating and adding characters to a campaign is my biggest gripe right now because it's not intuitive at all.

Oh, you email the link. So if I wanted to add one of my characters to my own campaign I will have to email the link to myself?
Oh, cool thank you.

Moved this over to bugs and support forum and tagged it as a requested feature!
