I'm putting together a Half-ogre race with 5 subraces but when I test in the character builder, I dont get the Half-ogre race. Instead the various subraces are listed as if they are individual races.
When I choose them I get the benefits of the half-ogre race and subrace but I want them all grouped together like how elves or dwarves are. The previous homebrews I made were for the goblinoids and for them I could list the various goblinoids as the parent race but in this case I can't since half-ogres are not a pre-existing PC race.
You don’t need to share anything with the comunity to use it. In fact. If you haven’t thoroughly playtested and edited it, it’s better to not share it with the comunity until you have.
You must have checked the “will have subraces” box and not actually created the subraces for it. Or, more likely, you created them, and published the homebrew but then you realized after publishing that they didn’t group up so you hit “create new version,” but when you do that for a race, the subraces don’t come with it and now those will have to be recreated from scratch.
The subraces will not group under the parent race the way they do with the official races. They just don’t do that, and there is no way to fix it currently. The closest you can get is to name them all ”Kitsune, [Subrace]” so that they will all group together alphabetically.
In future, do yourself a favor and hold off on publishing until all of the playtesting and editing has been completed. You, and the people in campaigns with you can automatically use your Homebrew projects even if they are not published. That will give you an opportunity to make sure everything works correctly before you publish them, because “published is permanent.”
Are you a tech that works on the program, or a user of the program? I am approaching this from the standpoint of it not making any logical sense: There is no way to do what has already been done with the program, and [they] bothered to make an error message for something that should work, but they know does not? I just find it way more likely we are doing it wrong. I haven't selected anything to publish, I didn't even know that had to be done manually (I thought everything I made on here was automatically made public). I suspected my lack of experience with this program was the actual problem, and I still hope it is. If I figure it out I'll post here...
No, things are not automatically shared with the comunity.
And “share with comunity” is synonymous with “publish” on DDB.
No, I don’t work here, but I’m at least as familiar with the creation software as anyone else, and more familiar than most people.
Having subraces nest under the parent race is something that we as users cannot do. This isn’t just me saying this, it is a fact. That capability has been locked away behind admin privileges that we don’t have access to.
Please be my guest, continue to search for a solution that I have not found in over a year of practically living in that homebrewer. You can think you’re not doing it right all you want. I know for a fact that it is simply not possible.
PS- The reason it makes no logical sense is because the entire history of the homebrewer itself makes no logical sense which is why they are in the middle of an entire systemwide overhaul.
Nearly 2025 and still nothing. Oh, I just love having eight subraces mixing into the eighty other homebrew races saved without being about to organize it.
And changing the name of each subrace to organize it still makes me scroll a while...

How do I fix this?
Name them all “Half-Ogre, [Subrace]” and they will go up alphabetically. There is no way to nest them as an option the way the official subraces are.

well dang.. Is there any word if they're planning on fixing it?
I'm doing the same for Kitsune and having the same issue. Any word on a fix yet?
~Stephanie
none yet
The first word anyone will ever hear of a fix is after it’s been fixed. At which point, there will be no need to ask because it will already work.

Yeah, my question was a polite way to remind those doing all the things for D&D Beyond that people still want a fix.

I am asking for help grouping my Kitsune subraces under the Kitsune race. I am getting an error message telling me:
How can this error message exist if there isn't a way to do it right? I am asking for help here not "thread bumping" whatever the hell that is...

Three years and no progress, would be a welcome QoL improvement.
