Admin, feel free to move my question to a better category. I was not sure. I created my character that I use in our campaign on here and used the manual entry method for ability scores. This has seemed to cause a problem now when I level up. My character just achieved 8th level and I tried to choose the Resilient Wisdom Feat. It did not allow for a gain in Wisdom on my character. Did I do something wrong? I can not manually increase the score and I notice that if you use manual entry, the racial bonus does not apply. Is there an explanation of the choices? I understand them at their basic level. Point buy vs manual vs standard but how does your choice affect the ability modifiers? Currently by choosing manual my racial bonus does not show. Thanks,
I tested the manual entry of the ability scores. Racial bonuses, ability score improvement and resilience feat add the right bonus to my manual entry. Can you post the link to your character so I can give a look?
Most likely a dumb question but are asking me to post a url link or is there another way to share it? And is this perfectly safe to do, account wise? Sorry if a am failing a technology/intelligence check, lol.
Thank you. My apologies in advance if I missed something obvious. One note though, I have not completed the upgrade from 6th level to 8th level (or level 7), as I was actually using a regular printed sheet for the last few levels...but anyway, I love this site, and have spent more money than I thought I would because you all have done such a great job.
I forgot to mention, I used the "Over ride score" button just before sending this, which naturally works but it does not explain my earliest question about why the feat did not raise the score.
If you go in the editor, "Ability" section, under the box for each ability you have an "Override" box. Your Wisdom was set to 19, that is why it didn't show 20. Now, I cleared that box and you are good.
Oops not sure if you saw my edit. I did the over ride after my original post but I will take a look, thanks. You are too quick, that you saw my link before I could edit the post to mention I recently used the override...
Yes, if you put any number if one of those Override boxes, no matter how many feats you have, or even items, your ability score will be set to that number.
Any time I try and put in my ability scores I end up with the same result. If I put in 12 the modifier says -4 total scores 3. and it says that with every number.
I love that my nearly 2 year old noob question from 2017 was used by you for your noob question. So many people here will be able to give you better answers, but essentially the original way to roll your stats was 3d6 on each stat. Back in the 1980's our group rolled 3d6, 6 times and placed the scores in which ability we wanted to. That has not changed much but there are several other methods including the following: rolling 4d6 and taking the best 3 numbers. Rolling 5d6 taking dropping the highest and lowest, keeping the middle three scores. Rolling 8 stats and dropping the highest and the lowest and keeping the 6 others...So many other options for the manual method, typically up to your DM. These would give the manual ability entries on DnD Beyond character creation.
Then there is "Point Buy" which gives you 27 points to distribute and add to your base scores of 8 but it is more complicated than that. To give a 15 to one of your stats which is the max, it costs more than 7 points, and the max is 15.
Then there is "Standard Array" which you get to place the following numbers into which stat you wish: 8, 10 ,12, 13,14, 15. The standard array is safer than rolling and what many, including my DM prefers. So many options and I did not list them all, but DnD Beyond gives you the three main options for character creation. Just play around with it and it will be clear. I would suggest standard array for new players. But since Rolling the dice is part of the game and the original way it was done in 1st edition, (I believe) give it a shot but be prepared to have a 4 or a 5 for one of your stats...and picking your race to boost a favored ability is mixed in. I actually like using unusual Races for my classes. I created a Goliath Wizard recently and he will be my next character. have fun and keep asking questions but just have fun making characters!

Going beyond 20 in Wisdom maybe?
No sir. (Or ma'am) But I did have a 19. Was hoping to go to 20 with the Wisdom Resiliant feat.
clear_seeker, post the link to your character sheet, otherwise, we can't identify the issue.

Yes, you can safely post the URL of the page of your character. Only staff and moderators can access it.

This maybe a noob question, but since I am a noob no foul? .. How do you arrive at an ability score? Is it a d20? or is it like 3d6?

Good morning all!
We really need to get new threads opened for additional questions/support, rather than pinging poor clear_seeker here 2 years later.
Going to lock this thread; Please feel free to open a new one with any new questions!
