The Digital Dice Portal is locked, so I'm posting here to see what happens.
First, I really like the Digital Dice roller in general. It allows me to roll and read dice more quickly than I can physical and it's more handy in some situations, esp sharing rolls with the DM. That said, I've noticed a couple of differences between the way the Digital Dice roll in a browser, depending on whether I am using the custom die roll (red die icon in lower left of character sheet) or if I'm clicking an attack/save/ability/initiative/etc. from the appropriate field on the sheet. The description by Wigen (per their comment, one of the devs) in this comment describing the dice roller includes the following:
First we randomize the start rotation so even if we dropped the dice without throwing them it would be random. Second we also throw the dice in a random direction with a random force, this makes it even more random! Third we also add an additional throwing rotational spin so when things collide they will collide differently even if for some reason the force and start rotation happened to be the same which that makes it even more random!!
When rolling from one of the character sheet fields, I see all three of these items in play: start rotation, throwing rotation, and direction.
However, the custom roller does not do this. It ALWAYS starts in the upper left corner of the browser window and ALWAYS throws toward the lower left (as noted by many who can't see the die roll because of the popup that reports the die roll), and it RARELY has much in the way of rotation. Most throws appear to have no (or minimal) rotation and often look like they will just slide to a stop with the same number on top when the die was thrown. In other words, it feels different from the die roller used for the specific check rolls from the sheet.
What would it take to adjust the custom roller to behave like every other roll with the Digital Dice and come from a (roughly) random location (usually middle of the page) and direction, and to have more rotation (both thrown and starting)? Or am I just imagining things?
I'm starting to distrust the rolles. They're don't feel not really random at all.
I can assure you, they are random.
Random they may be but they don’t feel accurate. This past Wednesday evening’s session the number showing as up on the die was clearly different than the number the character sheet registered as up on the die. It was quite disheartening since I saw the animation, did the math, gave the result and was about to pass a check when the result popup appeared with a number two points lower. I was confused until I realized the result it registered on the d20 was not the result the d20 was showing me.
