Writing because a player in my current campaign brought it to my attention that in regards to item creation there doesn't seem to be a graceful way to create versions of weapons in the item creation tool. It seems that whatever base weapon you choose, you're stuck with those stat blocks. For example if you want to create a Bad News from Matt Mercer's Gunslinger, there's no real way to do that. The closest you can get is using the Rifle, hunting as the base for the template, but it has the wrong dice for the damage.
I understand that due to the nature of how development goes, refining this process may not be quick or come anytime soon, I was just curious as to whether we should expect anything in the near future that would allow for more flexibility in creating items?
My personal hope is if the gunslinger does get implemented we may get the weapons (such as bad news) added as they were included in the origional document.

That's my hope as well, but realistically it limits your ability to homebrew your own weapons in the future. One of the appealing things to 5E over other systems, is how easy it is to homebrew your own things, and it feels like a bit of an oversight at the moment that homebrew is based around templates. It's super useful to have, but doesn't have a good feel that you don't have more control of it all.

Hey there,
Writing because a player in my current campaign brought it to my attention that in regards to item creation there doesn't seem to be a graceful way to create versions of weapons in the item creation tool. Here, here. Also, why limit most of it. If I want a ring that summons a blade to the wearer, is that a ring or a blade.
also a shadow blade I was making was supposed to only have necrotic damage, but there isn’t a way to get rid of the base weapon’s damage 😕
