This has been driving me nuts and I can't believe no one else has raised Gehenna over this!
These tools show up in equipment lists such as Basic Rules, Chapter 5 on equipment under Artisan Tools, I can add them to a character sheet in Inventory Management, yet I cannot select them from a list of proficiencies when making a character either as a racial, background or class feature and then the popup describes them generically as artisan tools in general, making it sound like you have to use one of the other tool sets in order to actually "tinker".
If this is designed as intended I would really appreciate it if someone would kindly explain it to me because as it stands right now, it makes no freakin sense to me and is massively frustrating since I'm creating a tinkering character.
Tinker's Tools is a type of artisan tool, just like smith's tools. Most classes do not give artisan tool proficiencies (except for Artificer, and they get Tinker tools for free). A background like Clan Crafter would grant them as a choice as would Guild Artisan. A Rock Gnome is also proficient in them.
