Me too, WotC if you guys do this, these people who made D&D great was not all you at WotC, it was the fans like all of us some are new but many of us were the older generations. I have 4 generations in my family that have supported WotC and TSR. If this goes through we walk a play other game systems.
I canceled my subscription two days ago and I have no plans to renew it going forward. I also have no plans to buy any more 1st party DND 5e or 6 content.
I have not yet cancelled my subscription, as I'm waiting to see how the OGL shakes out. The current OGL 1.1 would cause me to unsubscribe and stop purchasing DDB/WOTC products.
I could go on about corporate greed and trying to get more market share. But I think the issue is the lack of understanding anyone coming into the CEO of Wizards will have. This game is not Fortnight, or Ghost Recon or any of those games out there. Even if you move to a VTT style of play. DnD has a rich history and has an active and passionate community. You just learned this and you need to re-evaluate your business model. There are people around you that probably warned you this would be bad, and it was. You lost many subscriptions that may not come back. People are talking about switching to another game system as well. You lost site that the mechanics of DnD are not the only ones out there and the original OGL allowed you to grow and people stuck with it cause it made sense. Not cause DnD is the best one out there. All you did is remind people that a handful of CEO's and fat cats are only looking to make money and that DnD is just your path to another new luxury house. Like I suggested before, time for you to go to another company and Wizards, you need to find a CEO that gets it.
Has anyone read their new statement on the OGL. It is a full of lies. How stupid do these people think we are. I hope they are ready for court battles that will be coming their way. 1.0a can't be revoked but they need to learn this the hard way in court. You just killed your golden goose WOTC. They won't be getting any more money from me. They act like this war they started is done and is going away. It is not you better get ready WOTC for the battle that is coming. YOU WILL LOSE THIS FIGHT! Nothing you say will change that. We know you view us as obstacles in the way of "Your Money". Has anyone seen the Babylon 5 episode with the technomages. If you haven't you need to watch the part where Sheridan is talking to the leader about why they are leaving the galaxy. I think it fit well with what the player base is going to do with WOTC. "We do the only thing we can. We go" and D&D will be less because of it.
One thought I had, this has shades of TSR in the late 80's/first part of the 90's with how Lorraine Williams had a definite antipathy for D&D players and mismanaged TSR to the brink of oblivion (I don't think she's related to Hasbro CEO Cynthia Williams, but it sure feels like it). Naturally it's not a one-for-one comparison but the feel is the same in my estimation.
Gotta love when a beautiful thing gets ruined by greedy financial people. But all things considered critical role will still be fire on pathfinder or any other system they want to use. and Dropout.tv uses so many different systems i don't think they'll be too tore up. I'd love to hear their opinions on all this
Same here. Canceled my subscription two days ago. Won't be renewing it until they go back to old OGL.
I can't even fathom the dense, wall-ramming flat-head that would conceive such an endeavor would be profitable. WoTC are pushing away their own customers by trying to throw under the bus the people who helped the game gain such popularity, and expand the community. It's so bizarre, honestly.
I remember when I 1st started playing DND I was stationed overseas in the army. I didn't know anybody, I didn't know anything about the country, I was alone.
I remember hearing through the grapevine that other soldiers were getting together after the work day had completed to play a game and the more I heard about this in the background the more I thought well this game kind of sounds fun.
At one point another soldier in my section asks me if I want to play a session of DnD with them, and I thought well I don't have anything else to do so I'll come play it.
I sat down that whole afternoon I learned how to play the game from the free player's Handbook that was available at the time that I could look up online.
I read through it I learned the rules I thought they were weird at first, but it seemed like a lot of fun. I remember the 1st character I played was a dragon born paladin And I remember all of us getting ting together and while it was a homebrew game and it was kind of janky I remember it was the most fun I had in a very long time, and those friends I made at that group became some of my best friends.
Within the year that I was overseas I became a Dungeon Master for my group I loved the game so much that I memorized as much as I could about it I bought multiple hard covered books and I started running games 2 days out of the week for 6 to 8 hour sessions every time even if we didn't really do a whole lot it was fun to get together and play this game.
It was something that we could do and feel as a part of a greater community And that was one of the things that really drew me into it when I 1st started playing was the wonderful community, and all the support it had. It made it seem like it was a company that still cared about what it created and the people who played their game, and it frustrates me to no end that they would do this to their own community. Over money! Money of all things!
I have not played DnD for very long but anybody who knows me could tell you that I love the game. It is the one thing I focus on with my free thoughts, and the thought that they would do something so horrible as to hurt their content creators; to steal money from them makes me second guess the point of it all. Why hurt everyone who play this game. I hope everything gets fixed, I hope they backtrack this, and I hope the community can forgive them.
Because to me from someone who has not been in dnd for very long and has not seen its height and its pits, this seems like a complete nosedive to a crash and burn. Like it's the end of a wonderful franchise and I hope that's not the case
When has making the customers mad ever stopped Hasblow? They might change 1.1 now, but there is always 1.2 or 1.3 down the road. Never another cent for Hasblow!
We play a game that has some of the most complicated rules of any game ever created. A legal contract like an OGL is just another set of rules. Unlike almost any other company's customers, we can read and understand a contract like an OGL for ourselves. And yet WoTC execs think they can keep telling us lies about what WoTC was attempting to do with the new OGL. This really shows how little WoTC execs understand their customers.
WoTC won't get any more of my money until they stop telling lies and until they prove that they are committed (in a very real and legally binding sense) to continued support of the principles embodied in the original OGL.
Yep, if this change goes through. I will not be re-subscribing. Nor will I ever buy another WOTC product.
I have been playing magic for nearly 20 years, along with D&D. If the OGL 1.0a does not stand in perpetuity, then neither will my patronage.
Magic 30th anniversary nearly lost me as a customer.
This.
This will be the final straw. My collection in both regards is massive. So much so that they are both insured, consider that I am one of many who will be taking my money elsewhere.

yep, ive been here for more than 5 years and I've also just unsubscribed

First D&D set: 1980 red box. Haven't stopped playing since. :)
Canceled and I am out too. There is no turning back from this, the trust is gone.
Unsubbed, never buying another WotC product as long as this lasts. Which really won't be that hard to resist, but I'll miss the character slots.

Cancelled, hope the new CEO is better.
I’m out as well. Plenty of other game companies out there not looking to pickpocket their fan base. Sub canceled.

I love a good Babylon 5 reference.

Bye, I am out
I Cancelled my Master Tier Subscription January 14th 2023 because of "OGL" 1.1

They have no intention of fixing this, they have called us "obstacles to their success", and they feel the need to "Win" over their customers.
I have already cancelled my sub. Nothing short of:
1. CEO Removal/ Executive restructuring of WoTC.
2. OGL Is Irrevocable AND Perpetual.
3. WoTC signs on to the ORC licence set forward by Paizo and the other Creators.
There is very little reason for any of us to support this company any further, they have no respect for you.
I've read their most recent update post and its so strong with the gaslighting sort of language I can't stand it. Super disgusting.
