New here, not sure where this suggestion belongs? The character sheet feedback goes back over a year so that thread seems legacy, and searches weren't fruitful.
Would it be possible for a spell-casting class's character sheet to have the ability to automatically generate a shopping list from either the known spells or the prepared spells (depending on class)? This would allow material components be more easily integrated and used in campaigns because it would automate searching through all the spells for the components necessary. It would reduce the bookkeeping overhead but doesn't have to be used if groups tend to ignore material component requirements.
Essentially this would be a pivot on the material components where the list would have each component name, the cost (or minimum worth if cost is not available), and which spell it supports.
This would allow each player to more closely approximate the innate knowledge the character has -- they surely know what is needed to cast their spells since they know the spells in the first place.
Thanks for the reply. That items seems like it would be very useful for those campaigns that want to hand-wave the components. I'm interested in providing a home-brew option to up-scale spells using rarer and more specialized components and this would helpful. But it would be helpful to have this feature for any campaign that doesn't hand wave the components.
It's not really handwaving the components. It is an item straight from the base game. It's meant to be used And it doesn't get rid of the need for materials with a cost, it only gets rid of the headache from remembering and keeping track of 400 pointless materials that really only exist for flavor from this point
Or like the game i'm in there are no component pouch or focus a component list would be great as it is now i have to go through every spell i have or want and write out what i will need to find or buy.
For what you guys are wanting you'll have to track this on your own. There isn't a list online or in any of the books for components with no cost.
I do appreciate what you're wanting to do both as a DM and player that roleplays material component use, but there is just so much more pressing and important things for the dev's to do here.
My suggestion would be to list out your components in the other possessions section of your equipment and decide on costs with your DM and fellow players.

Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
This site lists all spells and you can filter specifically for spells requiring a material component. You can then go through to add all the listed material components. Voila, you have your list. Most don't have a cost - generally because most are almost worthless and can often be found or obtained free. So you'll have to assign a cost yourself.
It would be handy to have the system do this for you, but frankly so very, very, few games would ever need this that it's really not worth the time for the devs to implement it and even if they wanted to, the other projects and releases mean it will be pushed back for several months to over a year - you might as well just make the list yourself. - Yes that does sound tedious, but it sounds like in your game, the players will have an even more tedious time tracking this stuff every, single spell casting so - if you're going to inflict that on them, perhaps you deserve a little bit of it yourself? :P

If a player is interested in doing something like this, they should announce they are spending an hour or so each time they are in town shopping for components. They could head to an herb vendor, curio shop, or finding someone who can sell them bat guano and spider legs. Or, they can spend time in the evening while traveling looking for some of these things.
If the players themselves aren’t interested, don’t make it a big deal. If you decide it’s necessary, simply tell them they need to spend time stocking up before the group hits the road again. I wouldn’t make someone keep a spreadsheet of components that cold be bought in bulk for copper pieces.

There is an item called a component pouch. It contains all material spell components that do not have a specific value.

Yup, I agree. They are pointless. Just an idea to make them less so.

In the campaign i'm in we are stranded on a island with no shops or towns really, so we have to find everything for all spells
