Alphabetical certainly isn't the worst way to organize one's equipment, but man, I have OCPD, and I would kill a man to be able to group items by type or use. It's terribly bothersome to me to have weapons scattered across an inventory list instead of all together, and makes it harder for me to keep track of what I have. I'd love it if we had an option to have our things sorted by type, or even better yet, to be able to manually arrange the list ourselves.
Even having folder directories for pouches, backpacks, sacks, etc...to store items inside would be a "level up" in organizational sorting (especially for the collector PCs).
IamSposta, I've taken your advice and organized using emojis.
It's cool and helps.
However, have you noticed that if you have a lot of customized items and you close the tab or leave the webpage after adding new customized items, they might not remain or retain your new input, possibly reverting to their default name (e.g. "Unidentified Item 6"), or even disappear entirely? I've had this happen several times manually transferring 8th level PCs.
It’s a caching issue with the server. To fix it you have to log out and back in. That triggers the server to clear its cache. Then just wait up to 20 minutes for the system to finish updating and try it again, it should work.
Hi all, I found the following works really well for me.
I add backpacks to my inventory and rename the new backpacks to something more specific (ie. scroll case, potion bag, weapon rack). You can them move your inventory items from equipment into these "backpacks".

This thread was from before there were containers. Even backpacks were listed under “Equipment” back then, everything was listed under equipment back then, containers actually capable of containing anything is relatively new ‘round here.
Don’t forget that each backpack weighs 5 pounds. It might save you some encumbrance if you instead use alms boxes instead of backpacks since they are weightless and have no displayed maximum storage capacity.

Very useful info!
Do y'all have tips on how to organize the Bag of Holding, though? The bag (and all the contents inside) only weigh 15 pounds, but the bag itself can hold up to 500 pounds. Super useful when you're a pack-rat like me. Unfortunately, it proves to be a hassle when I want to find something based on its utility rather than its name. Using a container creates a completely separate bag and doesn't count as a divider within a pre-existing bag, which I think would be the most beneficial.
As it stands now, if I wanted to group all my character's spare clothing items so they're easier to find later down the road, I'd need to create a container, mark the container as inactive, put all my clothes in the inactive container, then manually add the container's weight to the Bag of Holding to ensure I'm not over the limit. The clothes aren't actually in a separate bag, but I have to treat them as such in order to organize them.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to put dividers inside a pre-existing container?
I customize the items and use emojis to “alphabetize” things. So I might put 🧥, 👕, or 👚 (depending on character gender) at the beginning of the name of each piece of clothing so they all group together. Or ⚔️ at the beginning of the name for all weapons so they group together. Or 💎 at the beginning of the name for all the gems so they group together. Stuff like that.

This thread has been very beneficial, but has anyone thought about possibly getting in contact with someone who has authority to see if they are still actually planning on adding folder and item moving, like google drive sort of, and if so when if possible. I just feel like it's been 4 years since then and nothing major on the topic has been presented.
Might be something to help you until they get the job done.
I want to bump this because I want a better inventory management system as well. I want to be able to determine the priority of where my equipment is and not rely on alphabetizing everything. Until then, I'll start using your emojis. Can you tell me where you get your emojis from?
Creating functions to put items in backpacks, sacks, and pouches has been a game changer for sorting the items I’ve acquired in my campaign. But now I’m running into another issue, this scroll down window is extremely long now.
I’ve noticed the “features and traits” sections now has a quick scroll feature allowing you to quickly skip to class features, species traits, and feats. As it stands inventory basically has one tab “All” lol it would be great if when you added a backpack or other container if a tab at the top of inventory would appear to let you quick scroll to the list you need rather that spending time scrolling when you want to locate something quickly!!

I agree -- bumping this up.

They are working on it currently. In the meantime, I organize things with emojis like this:

Good to know. Great idea in the meantime -- Thanks, again, IamSposta!

Oh, that’s a very clever work-around! Thank you!
This is still an issue, just let us move stuff manually between bags or up and down in our bags.

Bump - sorting in inventory would be really helpful - have a sort option for alphabetical, item type etc.
Esp for those of us who print our char sheets and avoid screens at the table
How did you do this?!

Years later and still nothing? Wtf WOTC!!
