This is only my opinion so please take it with a grain of salt but here is a play by play of how I felt when reviewing the pricing for the products and tiers.
ME: Oh hey Wizards, I really like this site you've got! It's about time that you put all that glorious content into such a friendly and usable space. Also, all the tools you've included really make this a useful website, I thoroughly enjoyed the Beta and I'm prepared to pay for using your content, how much will it be?
CURSE: Hey Levi and thanks for liking our products and enjoying our site, also thanks for participating in the Beta! Unfortunately we're not offering any discounts for Beta users but we do have some excellent prices for our core books for now, who knows if they'll last long but we clearly have our $30 PHB, DMG and MM on sale for $20 each!
ME: Wait, what happened to Wizards? Who are you?
CURSE: This site is owned, developed and maintained by Curse (part of the Twitch family), under a license from Wizards of the Coast.
ME: Oh, well that's cool I guess. So for $20 per book I can unlock everything in the books for use on your website? That's not a bad deal at all! I mean, I"ve already purchased the core books but if I get to use the content on your site with your tools then I'll make the purchase! I mean, for $60 I can make all those characters for my game and use them wit...*SMACK*
CURSE: *Wiping baby powder onto their smock and fanning the dust from the air* You seem to have misunderstood the pricing model. If you purchase the content you can use it whenever you want but you'll be subjected to complimentary advertisements and some things will be limited. There's a subscription fee, we call it the Hero Tier, intended primarily for players. This tier removes ads, allows you to create an unlimited number of characters, and add publicly-shared home brew content to your collection to use within the tool set. Also, there are multiple tiers and if you're a DM...are you a DM?
ME: Yeah, I *SMACK*
CURSE: Then it's double the normal subscription price for the "Master Tier" which is intended primarily for Dungeon Masters and player groups, this tier grants all the benefits of the Hero tier, and allows you to share all of your unlocked official content with other players within your campaigns so content does not have to be unlocked individually..
ME: *Rubbing my cheek as it burns redder than the sky at dawn* Alright...well if that's the case then I guess I need the Master Tier so that my players can use the content as well without having to buy it themselves, I never really thought of that. But what if I couldn't afford to upkeep the Master Tier or one of my players just wanted to buy a few feats and skills withou *FACE COLLAPSES*
CURSE: *Cleaning chunks of my face from their bloody warhammer* It's $1.99 per spell, feat or anything else partially purchased. The good news is that should you decide to purchase the full book in the future we'll discount what you're previously spent on the books from the total cost!
ME: *Gasping for breath and still crawling towards the counter out of stubborness* What if my internet goes down?
CURSE: *Sweeps my ashes under the rug*

You seem to have misunderstood the pricing model as well. If you've purchased the Player's Handbook, you have access to all the spells, feats etc and no need to partially purchase content from that book. These options were added, after feedback from the community asking to be able to do exactly this.
Thanks for the feedback guys, it was meant to entertain but also point out that I feel like the pricing scheme could be a lot more simple. I would love to see the pricing be set up in a THIS or THAT scheme instead. Either A) You pay the monthly subscription to to access the content you'd like and make characters/etc as a player would with a second monthly as a DM to unlock the extra books and content for use in your campaign OR B) You outright purchase the books and content once and never pay for them again. The site and included tools feel like they should be free to use for anybody that wants to, storing character sheet and information data can't take up that much room on a server, literally kilobytes right?

Isn't the pile of corpses enough of a signature? I think they get the point.
I think this is the perfect pricing system. Pay for what you want, piecemeal or in full.
Subscription for content might seem like a good idea, but it would eventually cause an issue of paying MUCH more than necessary for the entire content over time. This is even with the low cost of subscription. I'm surprised (and thankful!) its not more.
Also, with any online storage system, there's going to be many reasons for costs. There's hard drive space, bandwidth, maintenance, etc. It's not JUST storing kilobytes of data per person on a disk. Seeing as they ARE offering the services for free is amazing. The additional functionality is the only thing you get for subscriptions.
Curse fought hard to get pricing to where it is. I think it was a successful battle, and the pricing isn't bad at all. You aren't required to have a subscription in order to purchase and use the books. The subscription is for the toolset, which isn't needed for gameplay.

Subscriptions are not necessary nor mandatory to properly use the purchasable content.
Thank you for the feedback!
