as per title.. Since I have failed to find a relevant thread on the forum... how does one add a (possibly homebrewed) item to someone's character without revealing if it's cursed, a vestige or maybe has a special power, that we want to only reveal once the player attunes to it or accomplishes a plot determined task? Could I give my player X the item Y without him being able to see it's a vestige, or has a special property? Can I create a vestige and hide the relevant info about what the advanced states of the vestige do until the player gets to that point, or do I have to create multiple instances of the same item and swap them out according to the plot and circumstances?
Would that be something that DnDBeyond are looking into doing, or is it up to us to homebrew the items?
Put anything you don’t want them to see in a spoiler and then remove the item from your Homebrew collection after you add it to their sheet. Spoilers don’t open on character sheets, and if the item isn’t in your collection then they can’t look it up. Whenever they are supposed to be able to see that info you can update the item and it will update on their sheet to reveal that information.
Or you can create the item with the characteristics you want them to see and wait til they use it or trip it's other abilities. Then you can add the other abilities to the homebrew item. The way i do it is I have the visible item, then a second item with a different name with all the abilities/mods. They use the first, then I can replace it with the second.
As long as the item isn’t published, you don’t have to swap the items. By simply adding the next parts to the original will automatically push the changes to that version so the character sheet. That’s why I like that trick with the spoilers, all that needs be done is to “unspool” it and save.

Doesn't that only work in the description? I think if that is all you wanted - an extended description that the PCs don't know about, that is fine. However, if you want other abilities, modifiers, etc, I don't see a way to have those as spoilers.

Fair point. For that stuff they would also have to be added prior to unspooling the description. But honestly, if it would be that much work I would just drop a custom item directly on their character sheet labeled “Mystery Item” or something. (Or better yet, tell them to do it as it’s their responsibility to manage their own character sheet. I mean, I got enough to do as a DM.) Then whenever the reveal should occur I would go in, delete the placeholder, add the bling and tell them to refresh their page so it all happens as mysteriously for them as it does for their PC. I know, that’s cheap pop, but I’lll take whatever I can get. 😜

That is pretty much what i said I would do. I just did it with two different items so I don't have to waste game time adding modifiers, etc.
To piggyback on this. Is it possible to make homebrew items for my campaign, and not allow my players to have visibility to them? There are a couple things that I'm developing that shouldn't be visible to my party yet, and I don't know how to hide them...also, I have one item that one of my player's can't see, and another one can. What would cause this?
Any Homebrew that you “remove from collection” will be inaccessible by your players until you add it back to collection again.
On the Home tab of the character builder, one player likely has “Homebrew Content” toggled on (red, to the right), and the other player likely has it toggled off.

They'd have to actively search for the thing. If they don't know what it is, then they can't look at it.

Thanks for the response.
I should have mentioned that I checked that before asking. Both have the same settings toggled.
I was afraid that removing from my collection meant that I would lose the item. I've toggled it off, and that is exactly what I needed for that part of the question. Thank you!

for the record, I did it your way, and it works perfectly for my needs. thanks a bunch.
