Might be a dumb question if I've missed something blatantly obvious; but the Strixhaven backgrounds include the addition of the Strixhaven Initiate feat; is there actually a mechanical way to add this in the character builder presently? It doesn't seem to be currently implemented?
Not currently, it's stated in the bug section for Strixhaven on the first post you'd have to go in and manually add the feat from the manage feats section of the character sheet.
Is there a way to add the spells to your list from the character sheet? It doesn't let me add the spells to the character's spells known through the normal method, and I don't know if there's a way to just add things like there is for most other stuff on the character sheet.
When you add the appropriate Strixhaven Initiate feat in Manage Feats on the character sheet, there will be a little blue exclamation point on the feat. You'll have to click that to bring out the drop-down menus to choose the 2 cantrips and the spell.
The book is crazy with a lot of op stuff in it this feat is just one of the few things
Absolutely, backgrounds don't have prerequisites so there'll be nothing to stop any int/wis/chr dumped barbarian from becoming a Strixhaven student for free cantrips and spells.

I don't see it as OP myself, and if you and your group don't want the college in your campaign then just don't allow those backgrounds in your game.
After you've created the character, click on Features and Traits. Then scroll down to Manage Feats and click and Manage Feats. That should bring up a Manage Feats list on the right. Scroll down to the appropriate college and stat, for example "Strixhaven Initiate (Lorehold-Charisma)". Click the box that says Add next to it. Click on the exclamation point that should have appeared in the box with that appropriate college and stat. Scroll a little down. Before the next feat in the list, you should see three drop-down boxes that say choose spell. The first two will be the cantrips, the last one will be the spell. Make sure you select the spells there so they get added to your spell list, since they aren't just additions to your normal spell choices.

The second sentence of the "Character Options" section begins, "With your DM's permission..."
Therefor, the thing stopping players from becoming Strixhaven students in non-Strixhaven games is that they are literally not allowed to unless their DM says they can. These backgrounds are opt in from the DM.
Within the Strixhaven setting, though, everyone is a Strixhaven student and gets the spells so it's not OP. If everyone gets it it can't be OP because "over powered" has to be relative to something. If everyone is "over powered" then no one is "over powered."
By the way, you don’t want to look for the “Strixhaven Initiate” feat, for the character sheet functionality it was broken down by college name. Look for the college name you want and add the feat that way.

So if you’re looking for the “Strixhaven initiate” feat, you won’t find it. You have to look for the “Lorehold Student” feat, or the “Prismari Student” feat or whatever of the five colleges you want.

it was what WOC wanted, that every class could be played in the module

I ain't getting the 'select spells' part of the Strixhaven Initiate Feat.

the source book is shared with me through a campaign but I can't add the feat. Do I need to own it to add the feat?
I have the background
You need to add the feat directly on the character sheet. Go to Features & Traits—>Feats and click “Manage Feats.”

I can't find it in there for some reason
Is the character in the campaign where the content is being shared?

yes I'm able to choose the background but the feat doesn't show in the character builder or the manage feats section on the sheet.
