Iv been playing DND for a year as just a player and am wanting to try my hand at been a DM and looking at what i want to use hand in hand which seems to be roll20 and dndbeyond as roll20 seems good for actualy playing and dndbeyond for character sheets, iv read there is a extension for linking your character sheets to roll20 but i have a few questions on this,
Does each player need the extension?
Do the characters link to tokens in roll20?
as a DM if i buy a campaign on dndbeyond does that get added to roll20 or do i have to buy on both?
how easy and useful is it using dndbeyond and roll20 for a dm?
We use Roll20 and the Beyond20 extension on google chrome. Basically when you roll dice from your character sheet (saving throws, attack, damage, etc) it displays on Roll20. If you bring up a spell description on your character sheet there is a “display on VTT” button and the description shows on Roll20. You don’t need to buy stuff twice, as far as players go and I believe you can also roll from monster stat blocks on DDB to Roll20 as well.
edit: yes each player needs the extension to roll from their sheet
thanks for info, iv looked on beyond20 webpage but doesnt have to much info :P
ill probably be buying a campaign on roll20 and using that for monsters and will help the players set up the extension, im using explorer but it has chrome extensions too so im hoping it works still but since ill be using the roll20 for monsters i guess it doesnt matter if i have it or not :P
If you want to use a VTT and don’t want to spend the time making maps and tokens yourself, then getting them by purchasing the campaign in Roll20 saves a lot of time.
From my perspective the character sheets in Roll20 are not as well developed as DnDbeyond and using Beyond20 works almost faultlessly to send roll information from content on DnDB to R20. Sometimes changes at DnDbeyond or Roll20 breaks how it works but beyond20 is well supported and updates are frequent. You just need to generate a blank character sheet in R20 with a matching name and a token and B20 does the rest.
It’s easy to use the monsters in dndB and send the attack info to chat in the vtt.
For players to send their rolls (on their D&D Beyond sheets) over to roll20, they need the browser extension. If they have a roll20 character sheet, no need, but there are some annoyances to creating roll20 sheets.
This isn't really an answer to any of your questions, just going to throw in my experience of using the two as a player.
I really like DDB sheets for character creation and management. They let you know what you can and can't do, while roll20 proper implementation of the rules is up to you.
That said I prefer using the roll20 character sheet for actual gameplay, it is more customizable and easier to roll advantage/disadvantage, add buffs like bless, great weapon master, guidance, etc. to your rolls. DDB is actually pretty clunky comparatively.
It does require a bit of time outside of the game to transfer character info from my DDB sheet to roll20.
And the rolls seem to take longer to go through on DDB than on roll20.

The beyond20 extension allows advantage/disadvantage by simply holding shift or control while clicking.
Bless/Guidance can easily be created using hotkeys within the beyond20 extension (I usually bind G to add +d4 to a dice roll - just hold down G while clicking on the skill)
got 2 of the players setup with beyond20 last night and we played around with it some and we finding it easier than the roll20 character sheet, that been said for dndbeyond character sheet to link up with the character sheet on roll20 do the names just have to match for tokens to be linked via beyond20?

How do you do that? I know about adding custom modifiers, but you have to constantly add and remove them. Being able to bind keys would make a huge difference in ease of use.
EDIT: nevermind, I figured it out. I see you can click on the more options to the left of advanced options. FYI to anyone else there are a ton of standard hotkey options like sneak attack or great weapon master.

To the right of your character name, and to the left of the share button, there is a button labelled "Beyond20". Hover your mouse over that button and a popup will appear. You can select predefined options from that list, or you can click on the cog in the top-right corner to open the hotkey manager.

Yes each player needs the extention if you want the rolls to show up in Roll20. Shift and click for advantage and ctrl and click for disadvantage.
You will need to buy the roll20 modules to have access to the info there. None of the stuff here transfers over there. If you want to use the charactermancer in Roll20 you need to have the modules for the compendium on Roll20. A lot of the cool features require a subscription and compendium sharing for this.

This is true. You can work around it by adding in everything manually from your DDB sheet if you want.
Do you know if you have to have the subscription to use the charactermancer as a GM? I have the sub now and cannot test. I have a friend I am trying to walk through it and want to make sure they have some of the same options. From what I understand some of the options are not available like certain races and classes and backgrounds. Entering them by hand is an option but just not sure how to enter them :)
I'm not sure what level of subscription is needed. I know for some games I've played that have no content the charactermancer is available to use but like you say many of the options aren't available. Some of the stuff you can enter manually as a custom class/background/whatever as you create the character, other stuff you have to add manually on the sheet after its made through the charactermancer. On the finished character sheet the places that list features or whatever have an option to add things manually, for example the features and traits section has a plus sign you hit then can add the name and details.

The charactermancer on roll20 is determined by what you've purchased on roll20; if you're using beyond20 you should be using the DDB character tools.
Yeah. I own all the source books on here and only a few on Roll20 so it just makes a lot more sense to use the sheets here and Beyond20. I was thinking of tryin to runan adventure on Roll20 using their character sheets as it would limit the options for newer players. There are also the pre-gen characters that come with some modules and with DoIP and Lost Mine that is easy as you don't have to do the sheets here for people as a GM.

The extensions name is Beyond20, you might be able to look up some of the info you want.

I haven't played around much with Roll20. We use a Google Chrome extension called Above VTT that works with DnD Beyond. it's free and easy to use.
