If half-elves and half-orcs have darkvision as a racial ability, why not dragonborn? The Monster Manual has a half-dragon template. Take most any creature and add breath weapon and resistance to that type of damage (based on color of dragon lineage), knowledge of draconic, and blindsight and darkvision. Yet the PH does not provide darkvision or blindsight to DB, who are in pretty much every other way just a human using the half-dragon template. Is this an oversight (pardon the pun)? I can't think of a reason not to allow DB PCs to have darkvision at least and possibly blindsight. Sure, some say DB are generations removed from full-blood dragons, but still. Seems darkvision is a dominant gene among other races, so most DB should have it.
Kind sucks being the only member of your party to stumble around in a dark dungeon without darkvision. I'm gonna ask my DM to allow it. Just looking to see if anyone has a strong counterargument for why it should not be so.

Why not ask your DM to just allow it for Humans, Halflings, Warforged, or the rest of the half of all races that don’t get Darkvision then too.
Humans, or at least variant humans have more than enough going for them without. Warforged, too. Not sure current thought on Halflings. Even with the Fizbin version, do Dragonborn, though?
by god yes they do, a chromatic dragonborn, can become immune to the damage type of your ancestry for a whole minute, they get a better breathe weapon then base that is able to be used per prof number per long rest, and resistance
Gem dragons get 1 minute of flight and telepathy, instead of the immunity feature
and metallic get an entirely second breathe weapon that is used per long rest
these are all GREAT abilities, that should not be augmented with darkvision, as the race gets some great trade offs for it
Halflings had infravision (modern dark vision) in1st and 2nd edition. It was stripped from them in 3rd. Would be nice to give it back.
It was only 10 feet. That was why it was ditched.
Hey, 10 ft would be better than a kick in the dangly bits. But they have Lucky, which is, IMO, amazeballs. (At least it is if you roll 1s like I do). They don’t need Darkvision to be powerful. Neither do Dragonborn.

Exactly. Halflings get plenty of other abilities, they don't need darkvision.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
If you want to be dragonborn but not have the features of dragonborn go custom lineage..
OK legacy dragonborn were one of the weaker races but they have significantly been buffed. I am about to play in a situation where I was encouraged to build a powerful character for levels 1 to 3 and possibly a little beyond,. Having decided mood druid I decided Gem dragonborn was the optimal race Psionic mind is really great while wild shaped as well as and AOE attack and resistance to a damage type (I've gone necrotic)
If a party has some characters with dark vision and some without they have to deal with that, in the same way as the stealthy characters have to deal with having someone with heavy armor in the party (Or do you propose the paldin wearing heavy armor doesn't have disadvantage on stealth rolls because the rest of the party don't.
Even for party members with darkvision a light is useful, when in darkness a crearue with darkvision has disadvantage of perception checks that rely on sight and most can only see 60ft, while having dancing lights ahead of the party announces the parties presence to anyone in the area it also greatly improves the chances of avoiding being surprised by an ambush even for those with darkvision.
As an aside I am in a campaign that started with a me as a tortle, a warforged, a goliath a human and a changeling, plenty of races out there without darkvision. .

I'm DMing for a party where only one of the five characters lacks darkvision. She busts out a lantern when she needs to, and has been looking for goggles of night every chance she gets. (She won't find them, but I have other things in mind...)
Rather than just asking your DM to hand you darkvision, let them set up a side quest or drop some hard-earned loot for you to as a solution

Darkvision opportunities exist only for humor in that group, not tactical.

They already have good racial abilities. If I were your GM, I'd either say NO or yes, then take away one of your abilities without telling you.
Stock, you get a damage resistance based on scale colour, value depends on scale colour and what the DM tosses at the party, a once per short rest point blank conic AE and an inexplicably shorter than human life span. So for darkvision, you'd take away the breath? Or the resistance? That would be quite a nerf.
Exactly. If it is so very important, then give up something for it. Otherwise play by the rules. I think my reaction was more from the OP sounding pouty and demanding.

Except that doesn't seem rational to me, because it's not like they're replacing those with a powerful ability like truesight or blindsight. It's darkvision, a trait half the races in this game have and a trait that doesn't really break the game in any real way.

Because they have so many other good abilities already!
Dragonborn are not half-dragons.

Save up and go buy a pair of Goggles of Night , they don't do nothing!
Cry HAVOC! and let slip the mustelids of war...

Why dragonborn don't have Darkvision only WoTC can say, probably a design decision based on balance considering other features they have.
It was 30 or 60 feet depending on the sub-race.
