My friend, if you're thinking jumping to something like Alien (without going into the apples and oranges orientations of the two games) is going to save you the shipping headaches you've been apoplectic about, never pre-order or order direct from Free League's web shop. I say that as a big fan of Free League's games, including Alien. However, their fulfillment process has some reliability issues for over a year. I got Heart of Darkness I think a couple of weeks after release. Bladerunner arrived two days before it hit stores while other kickstarter backers got theirs much earlier. I am waiting on two other orders, one from early November, one from back in May that have yet to show. I honestly thought the May were add ons from the KS but turns out I ordered it on a sale, and it looks like what I ordered is now being listed as out of print.
That's only one non WotC TTRPG maker with a lot more direct to consumer delivery experience than WotC (if we go by the theory that WotC;s trying fulfillment without any assistance or knowledge from other Hasbro components that know a little bit about physical order fulfillment, like their Pulse program for whale toy buyers). I could run you other invoices. Some mfr's are really good in this environment (like Steve Jackson, and Atlas Games really surprised me with their turn around on a Black Friday order) whereas Free League and WotC are presently leaving a lot more to be desired (and may be extreme outliers in that regard). I haven't raged though. I'm well aware we're going into year three of global shipping problems and the long term viability of "on demand" shipping is being called into question by a lot of systems presently frustrated (labor and shipping and global exchange rates just being three). It's economic reality now.
I really don't see anything to cause massive outrage other than an inability to accept the fact that you among many were stuck within a slower than you expected but within contract timeframe. Pre-ordering secured you a copy, there could have been a run on Dragonlance (I don't think there's been a run on anything WotC D&D since Strixhaven though based on a couple FLGSs I frequent) and you'd have yours and not be waiting a few quarters to get reprints.
I mean, I guess this thread is here to rage. I think it's actually funny that there's a thread trying to be more even keeled simply asking questions about the DL shipping and then there's this "outrage" thread. Different strokes I guess. Anyway, clearly WotC didn't get things out according to their initial plan, though it was admitted though not loudly proclaimed that this was a first time experiment. Personally I'm curious how the other physical bundles are going. Maybe WotC at some point after both those experiments go through their intitial phases (DL orders fulfilled, the other bundles maybe through the holiday season). Maybe they will note lessons learned (Steve Jackson GAmes is really good at that stuff, as are other mfrs. but not all), maybe they won't. Maybe it's a screen name thing.
There is no global shipping slowdown. Any shipping slowdown is caused by the shippers not willing to pay competitive prices for workers. As for the Vid that excuse is LONG over. If employers are not adjusted by now then they are fools.

You can pretend things are in fact that simplistic, so I guess 50% of the TTRPG industry are ENNIE winning fools. Labor is but one factor, with a bunch of intersecting factors within it. And let's not forget what Kenobi said, dear loyal customer ;)
To me, this whole thing has been a total trainwreck for a number of reasons and I've very unhappy about it all.
I worked my ass off as an artist with commissions to get the funds together to order the Deluxe set towards the end of August. It was pricey, at about nearly $200USD with the added shipping costs to New Zealand. After that, I figured all would be fine, until I checked the site a few weeks before release.
The thing that bothered me was now on their site, they said shipping was free to New Zealand and several other places. There had never been any communication about any of this, or refund of the extra shipping fees I'd paid that now weren't being charged. Because that extra $45USD shipping is actually quite a bit to me, I opened a ticket to ask about that and seeing if I could get a refund on that, given now that shipping was no longer being charged. A couple of days later, I did get a reply and they agreed as a 'one off' they would refund it, but generally refunds weren't permitted.
I'm sorry, but if you remove the shipping costs after I've already paid it and then pretend nothing happened unless I contacted you after discovering it and then tell me that it's a 'one off', then you are effectively stealing money from me that should be rightfully been refunded. The lack of communication and transparency on that bothered me greatly.
Now, the deluxe set is here, in New Zealand. I held it in my hands today as I looked it over in my local game store. And the cost is considerably less than what I paid.
And guess what? There's been zero communication about them shipping out my copy. No emails advising of delays or shipping codes or anything. It's been out almost two weeks and I have no idea when or if it'll arrive. I pre-ordered to get it earlier and ensure that I had it in time for my planned start of the campaign in January, but even that I doubt will happen from what I've been seeing. I've opened up another ticket to find out what's happening, but nothing so far. Cause you know; you tend to pre-order something to ensure you have it by release date.
This pre-order of physical goods has been a total disaster from start to finish with a lack of transparency and communication and I can safely say that I will not be trying it again. I'll stick with my local game stores at this rate.
Well, to inject some positivity in this thread, I got my deluxe edition today, a whole day early!
Bad news is that the deluxe box and the boardgame box inside got dinged a bit on the corner, just as others have mentioned for their copies. It is not too bad, and I plan to use this copy anyways, rather than havng it sit on a shelf, so a slight ding is not really a dealbreaker. The book itself is fine though, as it is well protected inside the deluxe box sandwiched between the boardgame and the GM screen. The exclusive cover art is pretty cool; I wish the foil is a bit more shiny though. I prefer it to bling more like Yu-Gi-Oh cards.
I guess my main complaint would be the packaging, as it could use some improvement. The packaging box they used fits the deluxe box snugly on all sides except the top, where they put some air bags. So, unless the package gets bumped specifically from the top, it is going to damage the deluxe box inside. Basically they need packaging box that is larger than the deluxe box on all dimensions, and then pack air bags in the gap between the deluxe box and packaging box.
Another change I would like to see is be able to open the deluxe box like a regular box with flaps, if that makes sense? With its current construction, there is a perforated strip that you have to tear out to open the box, which I am not a fan of.
There is no global shipping slowdown. Any shipping slowdown is caused by the shippers not willing to pay competitive prices for workers. As for the Vid that excuse is LONG over. If employers are not adjusted by now then they are fools.
There is a slowdown in supply chain every holiday season. This holiday season is no exception.
While you have it right that pay is one contributing factor, it is not the only one. I can scream at my boss's boss to give my boss, peers, and workers for higher wages, but they are not going to do shit about it. The only thing I can do is quit and have most of the best workers quit with me. So yeah, if you want workers to have higher wages, unfortunately that means the supply chain is going to suffer even more in the short term as workers move to better industries.
Another factor is people want their vacation and take time off. One of my peers is on holiday for three weeks starting yesterday. My boss and another peer will probably take some time off too when we get closer to Christmas and New Years. We may be down three of the most important people for a week or two if their vacation overlaps. Oh, and some of my workers probably want some time off too, so yeah, expect delays, delays, and more delays.
Disease is a big thing. COVID is endemic and here to stay; I literally got it the first time two months ago, and that knocked me out for a week and a half; my boss got it about two weeks ago and knocked him out for about a week. RSV is the new kid on the block, and my coworker's nephew got it. And the flu is back with a vengeance, or at least that is how I feel right now, my muscles are in pain. I am extremely irritable right now, and I had a dumb argument with a friend over group text. You do not want me at work spreading the flu and cussing business clients out. If you have the luxury of working at home and did not need face clients or catch illness, good for you, but do not rub it in on the rest of us who have to leave the house every day to go to work.

This is pretty common though? Sales are usually final, so unless you bring it up to the business, they are not going to proactively do anything about it. This is no different from buying something from a store, and then the next day you see the store having a flash sale on the thing you just purchased a day ago. Sometimes the store will refund you the difference, but sometimes they will not.
Australia and New Zealand are not exactly the easiest places to ship things to due to distance and lower demand, so I am guessing Wizards have not had a shipping deal worked out to deliver things for free down south until more recently
I just got my deluxe bundle in the mail today, and am honestly disappointed. It came with 2 battle tiles labeled 3 (side a and b) and did not come with Battle Tile number 2 so 6 of these battle scenarios are completely unplayable as they require battle tile #2. That's $168.35 down the drain.

All of these issues boil down to wotc using a fulfillment vendor with a horrendous reputation, scalefast. Check your order confirmation it's from scalefast not wotc.
Holiday shipping is problematic but can be managed. I managed fulfillment for one of the big 4 banks for 4 years and never missed an SLA so that should be our expectation.
except there very much is a shipping issue right now worldwide, package shipping companies are short staffed, and in need of workers due to the diseases, and the increase of this years shipping amount as well as other factors, so....not true, that should not be our expectation
thats not even me trying to support wizards, communication was shit, and thats the thing they shouldve been better at.
but there is an international slow down on shipping, you may not know about it, because your companies that are shipping to you, are giving you really good estimated time, incluuding the slowdown in their shipping math, or because you havent been paying attention, but shipping is crazy right now
regardless it can be managed I had a great relationship with not just our UPS drivers but also the UPS airport hub and distro center. Everything you laid out can be overcome I ran fullfillment the first 1.5 yrs of the pandemic none of this is new.
The problem is WOTC used a vendor and anytime you use vendor they never care about your clients the way you would. I also blame the new WOTC CEO since she ran fulfillment for amazon before coming to WOTC. So clearly she knows how to work around these issues but has chosen not to.
They should have given us the option to have our orders delivered to a local vendor with their order. Would have been an easy to save on shipping, and give a small kickback to the local vendors.

cool, I currently work logistics....your using old information and stuff to justify something your not currently working in, its gotten even harder then the first year of the pandemic for multiple reasons, it has nothing to do with WOTC using a vendor, and moreso the fact they are brand new walking into this, and there are already issues for the major companies doing so. the only reason they seem to be delivering on time is because the major corporations are taking that time generally into account when they give you your estimation

I'm also in logistics and can concur that shipping times have been increasing steadily even before the pandemic started. Large item, small item, it doesn't matter, the shipping lanes across the country and across the globe have been in a steady decline for years. Add onto that the continued fallout from the pandemic and we're right in to middle of holiday peak season. Stuff just isn't moving. This time of year my drivers should be leaving here with a dozen residential deliveries every day playing Santa Claus and none of them are leaving with more than 5 deliveries today. It's not final mile providers, it's the cross country shipping lanes and warehouse hubs that are the biggest choking points in the industry right now.
In other words, be patient or go pick it up from the store yourself.
They should have given us the option to have our orders delivered to a local vendor with their order. Would have been an easy to save on shipping, and give a small kickback to the local vendors.
You could have put your LGS as the shipping address. I'd probably reach out to them before doing so to make sure they're cool with accepting and holding your delivery.

Amazon only knows how to throw money and labor at something, they haven't figured out anything new. You're assuming a lot of a big wig to know how to make shipping more efficient and timely when it's the truck drivers and delivery drivers doing the actual work.
You could have had you stuff delivered to your local vendor but the sender would not care that its a local vendor. They only see joe smoes name and assume its a residential address.
The printer buts the books in boxes on skids and ships them out to either a bog box store, your local vendor, a shipping agency like amazon or a small shipping agency who individually packages each book and ships them out by any transport agency.
Which of these groups failed?
The printer hit his time limit and shipped to the stores on time. Amazon seems to be getting things out on time. That leaves the small mom and pop shippers.
You pay $165 to preorder something and get it up to a month after it’s released and see how you feel.
I mean, I both used to work in the industry and have? its standard, you really dont have anything to complain bout, its not even three days yet, where i live, i wouldnt even get it till next week due to how mail/shipping works
Just for tje record, no this is absolutely not standard.

just for the record, it is industry standard to have a solid wait time, they said that 1-2 days after its release, not even giving it a solid 3 days

Getting your (overpriced) preorder later then order from a LFGS is not (or at least should not be) a standard, stop with this WotC whiteknighting .
