Subtype and Kind are both super vague, and the former makes zero sense in this context. I like species best, but in all honesty, what term is picked doesn't really matter that much to me as long as the old offensive term isn't allowed to stay.
“Subtype” makes sense. Since the “creature type” is Humanoid or Fey or whatever, so the “subtype” would be Elf or Satyr or whatever.
It would certainly do the trick, but it would be a longer way to say write it out in the books. "Choose your Creature Subtype" vs "Choose your Species" for example.
Edit: Not counting the paragraph to explain what a creature subtype means.
So what? Seriously, what real difference does that make to us as the consumer? Once one understands these concepts one no longer actually reads the line, simply seeing it triggers the meaning of the concept within it he human brain. So it won’t actually take any longer to read, and it would only add one extra word in the sentence.

How so? Creature Type - Humanoid; Subtype - Warforged (or whatever)

I could see the merit of this if WotC expands the playable Creature Types more as well. Right now everything presented for OneDnD is Humanoid, but I could see changing that up a bit like they did for Thri-Keen, Satyr, and Plazmoids.

Might be a bit formal but it feels like more of an open invitation for someone to RP how their character views themselves, and the characters take on what the rest of the universe thinks of the individuals of that particular lineage.
Species just sounds too snooty and condescending , almost like Alan Rickman deadpan looking at you and going "What was your species again? Oh, right sorry."
Since we can do what we wish at our tables, "heritage" works for me regardless what WotC decided. The way OneD&D UA is handling mixed peoples, playable characters are pretty much one species now mechanically, which is how the word "species" feels to me: mechanical, lacking all sense of the social aspects that go beyond biological science.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Humanoid subtype works the best IMO. I don't like calling them species because it makes interbreeding weird and literally dehumanizes all the other races.
I always considered fantasy races no different than humans with them being generalized based on common phenotypes except with magic involved.
I think lineage, ancestry, humanoid subetype, race, breed, and phenotype are all more appropriate terms than species.
Species is my pick above the others. There's a lot I could say on the topic from personal experience. But I'd probably do it poorly. So I'll just leave it at that. From one person to whom it matters a good deal, I personally prefer Species.
“Subtype” makes sense. Since the “creature type” is Humanoid or Fey or whatever, so the “subtype” would be Elf or Satyr or whatever.
I guess. It just seems a bit odd to refer to PCs with "creature type" and creature "subtype". I mean, how many times have you heard people say "That elf creature" or "That human creature!" or "That robot creature" in fantasy? To be honest, subtype only makes sense within D&D mechanical language, and if other terms like species are going to be criticized for having one definition that doesn't 100% fit into real-world language, then subtype or creature subtype makes far less sense in that regard.
Idk. I've been letting this slosh around in my head all day but am still having a bit of trouble articulating my point.

I get what you’re saying, but my point is that “subtype” would be a purely mechanical term specific to D&D and therefore would move away from any real-world connotation. It’s safer that way.
I guess I can see what you mean there, Sposta. It’s just that when a new player sees a term like “subtype,” it’s going to be a lot less clear to them what it’s referring to than “species” would be. I mean, sure, you can explain it to them, but it’s a lot less intuitive and not every new player has someone at hand to explain things to them if they’re confused.

Agreed. If you look at MMM I'm betting you'll have something like Humanoid (Drow) and then text in the description saying they count as and elf for anything that requires it.

But in all seriousness, I don't like "Kind" for exactly that reason.

Currently the Poll on the OneDnD subreddit is treading towards Species with Kind in second place.

HERE.A few extra sentences in the paragraph that explains what their creature type means should do. I doubt it would be too confusing.
