Nobody is forcing you to pay. There are easy options to use. If you NEED more than 6 characters, then dang, you're lucky. Seriously, being able to play 6 characters? That's 6 days a week of play. Holy Moly I wish I was that fortunate.
If you just want to generate NPCs or something, they don't need a full character sheet. If you need something like that, print or save the PDF =)
Not NPCs, I don't usually use NPC statblocks other than the ones given.
Yes, players definitely have enough slots. How are you in more than 6 campaigns?
But as a DM... I need PCs. I don't run the campaign on ddb, but I still like to keep track on ddb.
In my opinion eight is a reasonable number for everyone
Any Character not run by a Player is an “NPC,” even if you build it as a PC. I also build most of my NPCs using the PC builder, but an annual DDB account costs less than an X-Box Gold membership. And if you don’t have a lot of content and don’t need the Content Sharing, then the Hero Tier is cheaper and still grants infinite Characters.

I copy the PC. Is that not a PC?
PC = “Player Character” NPC = “Non-Player Character”
The 4-6 people running around your world controlled by your players are the PCs, then entire rest of the population of the entire multiverse (anyone run by the DM) are NPCs.

I know, I just like to have the PC sheets on ddb
Then spend the 25.99$ for an annual Hero tier sub and get an infinite number of Character Slots. An annual Hero Tier subscription on DDB is literally less money (by almost $10) than a full tank of gas for my little 4-cylinder hatchback.
And that Hero Tier will also get you access to the Combat Tracker Alpha test as well as dibs on early testing on future products as well.
If money is a real concern the best option is indeed to export as pdf. If you need to adjust the character at a later date just export one you have to another pdf and delete it. Then it's just a matter of a few clicks and referencing your pdf collection to recreate them in ddb to adjust them.
Also note that using the books in their digital form is farm superior to their paper counterparts because you can quickly sift through rules with a few clicked and the find features. This to me is well worth the value.
I want more char slots but I have zero interest in a subscription. Accordingly I just keep making more free accounts, I have 3 so far.
The engineering cost of more char slots is very minimal, there's no reason not to sell a char slot unlock pack for a nominal fee, that same way all the other content on the site is sold.
There should def be an option to just buy more character slots, I feel like 8/10 people don't need unlimited, but it would be nice to have more in order to have room to experiment or try out funny things while still having enough slots for the campaigns you are already in. I would 100% buy them if they were just a one time purchase but idk about a subscription.
I also would like to buy more character slots if they were offered as a one time purchase. I have no interest in anything else offered in the lowest subscription tier other than the character slots.

This is a bad business model.

Makes no sense.
