So I joined an online game, and we all created our characters before we joined and when we all joined for our first session, we discovered that we had 3 archers...
One of the archers is going to be a beastmaster, so a completely different area to me however, I was going for a high damage dps build and one of the other rangers had already claimed this and is a min/max player with like 30 yrs experience who will be playing a gloomstalker. They all say its awesome to have three archers with different ideas but I'm worried that because we already have a gloom stalker anything I do will look useless next to this player because I wanted to be a horizon walker which for all intents was also DPS. I am thinking that perhaps I need to change my idea and multiclass into druid or something so I can get more area-of-effect moves, something that I think we might need within the party anyway...
I don't know, I just don't want to be useless in a party of very experienced DND players. Any feedback would be awesome. What do you think the best thing to do here would be? Stick with Horizon Walker, or Swap to multiclass druid? Also we are only just about to become level 2 this weekend so now is still the perfect time to decide.
Thanks to anyone who helps me with this. I really appreciate it. :)
what are the other party members, or are there only you three rangers? What is your ability spread?
Horizon Walker is not bad but needs to use its bonus action and requires a higher level for the really cool features.
You could also go for Fey Wanderer (to be the face of the party) or Swarmkeeper (control option at 3rd level), opening up totally different options for you compared to the other two.
This is why I always advocate for a session zero! That way you don't find these types of things out the first night of gaming. But since it's too late for that, here are some options:
1. Since you have three rangers, you could always ask the DM if you switching would be ok. I think most DMs would be fine with it. Then you could just go full druid or whatever else. Having three of the same class can just feel meh. You're all doing the same things. It can feel underwhelming and none of you will feel special.
2. If you wanted to stay ranger, there is nothing wrong with horizon Walker. Your damage will be comparable to a gloom stalker except for the first round or while in darkness. They'll likely make other min/max decisions that might dwarf anything anyone else can do but if that's the case, just don't compare yourself to them on damage. Focus on being the ranger who tells the best story and your table will be better off for it.
3. You could go five levels in ranger for extra attack, then go the rest rogue or 2-3 levels in fighter. If the gloom stalker is a power gamer that's likely what he or she will do though. I guess just talk to the player. You could go druid and focus on summoning spells combined with your attacks. Sadly not the best combination. Nature domain cleric would be a slightly better way to go but I'm not a huge fan of either. I feel like you're just a worse cleric or druid and option one will be better.
4. I personally don't like min/maxing. If one person at the table does it, it kinda means everyone has to or it'll just not feel great. The story is not better because one person does tons of damage. It can even mean the experience as a whole is less fun. Another option would be to find another table. This can be a bummer and it can be difficult to find games though. The other options might be better for you.
What level is the party? Different tiers of play can impact the sort of features available to you all.
What sort of setting will you be playing in? Gloom Stalker is tailor-made for the Underdark, and Beast Master loves places where the biggest and baddest beasts roam, like Chult with its dinosaurs. Horizon Walkers like anywhere with extraplanar portals, such as the Feywild or Astral Plane.
For potential multiclass options, the two that stick out to me most are monk and life cleric. Monk gives scaling AC and turns most simple melee weapons into dexterity weapons, making you more versatile as a switch-hitter, not weak at either range or melee. Life cleric opens the cleric-berry combo, letting you heal upwards to 40 hp with a single 1st-level spell slot, split between whoever needs to be topped off.
I'd personally ignore the Gloom Stalker player here. Play the character you want to play. Most min-maxers tend to sacrifice something to get to their numbers, and he/she will feel the heat once it comes up.
don't compromise just yet! if anything, i think you should lean into the horizon walker's theme of working to "preserve life and the order of the planes" stuff. let this other guy show off their min/max while you go story. see if the dm can work in some "benevolent dragons, fey, and elementals" and then interact with the gloomstalker on a narrative level when they try to solve every issue with an arrow. you don't have to go nuts on the role play; however, if you're feeling intimidated it might help to have a character who is not. maybe your character is professional and positive and willing to take advice but also has a strong sense of self. you got this!

Play what you want to play. What you will have fun playing. It’s not a competition between you and the other players. Depending on your scores I might take a couple levels of Druid and use various buffs/control spells to augment your party. If most of you are archers, entangle or spike growth can keep enemies back so you can shoot in relative safety.
What other PC’s are there besides the two other rangers? Or is that it?
Tons of options open to you, so you simply need to pick what works best for you. As has been said, a party with 3 archers could do quite well. Other ideas concern mainly, in my view, what the rest of the party looks like. Also, how stuck are you to the Ranger you've made? If it's a character you really want to play, let rip and go with it, you'll have a blast. If it's a character you can take or leave for now, with no real regrets, it's a chance to look a the party overall and maybe choose something to fill a gap.
I respect your concerns that what you are planning may be slightly overshadowed by the Gloomstalker. I am DM for a party that has one and he is a force for sure, with solid, pretty reliable DPR numbers. It may or may not end up annoying you in the long run if you find yourself coming in just under the Gloomstalker on a regular basis. An example id the party I play in, where I am a Monk, and we have a Fighter and a Barbarian. Naturally I am behind in damage dealing, but it doesn't bother me, because of the other stuff I am doing in and out of combat. It's a little different with Rangers, because outside of combat their class abilities are the ones used and you will all have them. Most Ranger subclass bits are combat related so that's where you'll see the differences.

As others have asked - is it just the three rangers? Or what are the other party members? Also what is the party level? Since all 3 of you have subclasses I assume you’re probably level 3-4. Generally I agree with Sposta on not multiclassing as a beginner - especially with half casters and normally super especially with rangers as the multi class mostly just confuses all the issues of what sort of ranger your going to be (melee, archer, caster, beastmaster). However, in this case it offers some possibilities multiclassing or taking a feat at L4 to change up how you do your ranger. Horizonwalker works well as both an archer and a melee ranger so you might consider being the front man for the party not the rear cover guy there are a few ways to do that - fighting initiate feat - with this you can take great weapon fighting and a great weapon for melee combat now instead of 1d6 or 1d8 base damage your getting 1d10/1d12/2d6 base damage with a reroll of a 1 or 2. Druidic warrior fighting style - 2 Druid cantrips that you can use for melee fighting like primal savagery, thorn whip, poison spray, etc. Magic initiate - sorceror 2 cantrips for things like booming blade and green flame blade and one L1 spell like witchbolt, Thunderwave, burning hands for close quarters combat. Each will give you your own unique twist on being a melee ranger.
or
by taking long ranged cantrips or a level in sorceror or warlock for the cantrips and spellslots to be a ranged caster “archer” - yes the ranged spells (normally) only fire once a round but after L5 (character level) they do double damage ( or Eldritch blast does 2 attacks) so your not losing too much. Other feats that might be useful down the line include pole arm master, medium armor master, slasher, and others.
Hello. My party members are all level 1 who are levelling up this weekend. At the moment we have the other two rangers, myself, a cleric with high ac and a wizard with fireball. Iv never managed to keep a party together past level 5 and this character is the first character I ever created but I have had to change her considerably because of the background story. We are playing a semi-home brew campaign where we will be going into the under dark and fighting in part of a war. I will add that the gloomstalker doesn’t seem to have very good luck with the rolls lol. He has already hit for like almost 30 points of damage at level 1 though despite almost missing every other shot. I like the idea of teleporting around and doing melee damage as well but I have never been a melee fighter so I have no idea how to optimise that. Iv currently picked archery as my fighting style and ensnaring strike+zephyr strike as my two spells at level 2. I have two short swords and a longbow at the moment. I’m thinking of buying a heavy crossbow when we make it to the next town. I think if I wanted to be a more melee attacker I need a higher ac as it is currently only 14; I’m a wood elf with leather armour. I can only really up that about 1 if I understand correctly with studded armour without causing disadvantage.
With this new information, it sounds like the party definitely lacks frontliners. Clerics can make decent tanks with medium or heavy armor, a shield and spells like spirit guardians, but this will not help if your party gets flanked. I'd advise you to make your niche in the party as the rear guard, contributing to normal fights as an archer and tying up ambushes in two-front engagements.
Do you have the Crossbow Expert feat? If not, and you want to pick up a heavy crossbow later, having that feat will be essential to not get bogged down by the Loading property crossbows have. Being able to shoot in melee without disadvantage is also nice. If you already have it, consider Medium Armor Master or asking the wizard for mage armor.

with 4 classes based on WIS and one based on INT you have no real face in the party? If you are open for another subclass consider feywanderer. At 5th level you get misty step which still allows you to teleport around (and later you get extra free uses to teleport), and your extra damage doesn't eat into your bonus action leaving it open for the bonus action attack from crossbow expert
So right now all of you are just low level starting rangers with no subclass. As you level up and get some cash 😁 chain shirt (AC13,50$) and Breastplate (AC14, $400) both don’t provide stealth disadvantage. If you want to go melee first, archery second talk to the DM about switching the archery fighting style for either defense (+1AC) or two weapon fighting. Keep the bow as your long range weapon but you become the point man of the team. Assuming the DM allows the Tasha’s martial versatility (check) you can change out two weapon fighting for defense or something else at L4 if you take it. Hopefully you can afford a chain shirt in the next town (again talk to the DM about maybe being allowed to switch the leather for a chain shirt which costs the same as the scale mail allowed as starting equipment) if you go melee I wouldn’t bother with the crossbow as archery will become your secondary attack and the long bow will be fine. Assuming the DM allows the switches I would say go defensive fighting style, either get the DM to approve switching out the leather for a chain shirt or using the cash for the crossbow on a chain shirt instead. You would still get a +3 (db) to your archery but you would be AC17 with no disadvantage on stealth. If the DM allows the armor changeout then I would sell one of the short swords and get a rapier (d8 and finesse) and a shield so you would then be AC 19 with a Dex based d8 weapon. What is your strength score? At Level 4 it will matter in terms of what you do with your ASI. If it’s low then going great weapon fighting is a poor choice and your stuck between raising your Dex or taking medium armor master (+3 Dex to AC) overall your probably better off upping Dex to 18 for the +1 to attacks.
I will add that the gloomstalker doesn’t seem to have very good luck with the rolls lol. He has already hit for like almost 30 points of damage at level 1 though despite almost missing every other shot.
can you explain how a level 1 ranger can do 30 points of damage? I can't envision it. Unless the homebrew is giving some major extra powers?
I want to change my level 1 ranger that we are starting a campaign in a few weeks so I can do similar.
As someone who has not once built a character specifically to help boost the party's overall effectiveness. I say one should build what they want to play, and let the game story line grow from there.
I also agree with those folks who caution against making their first character(s) multi-class or home brew, as there is so much to learn at first that adding more details to remember and deal with can be counterproductive to the new player.

Could have been the dread ambusher extra d8 damage and maybe they have VHuman with sharpshooter +10 damage? Do 1d8+mod+d8+10? Only thing I could think of.
And that means he maxed his rolls on the D8s as well. Let’s see at L1 he shouldn’t have dread ambusher because he isn’t supposed to get any of the subclass benefits until L3. So it should just be 1-attack so 1 arrow +7 to hit, for D8 +3 DB damage at L1.he shouldn’t have any spells or other extra damage bonuses yet. So yeah just how did he deal 30 HP damage in a round?
Um, okay, I will try. Obviously, this was not my character, so I am just gonna try and remember from the session a week ago. I know he took variant human so that he got a feat off the bat and used that for sharpshooter. In this particular shot, he hit after using sharpshooter so +10 damage. I will also note I was being slightly dramatic because one of the other players said his max on that hit was higher then he hit for, that it was a max hit of 30ish which is what stuck In my mind. I belive he hit for 22 or 24 or something.
So let's assume max roll.
sharpshooter = +10
longbow = +8 and he gets a +3 because of his dex I think? it says d8+3
