You and anybody else can choose to let him off the hook for this goof or not, but it is a goof. Either that or it's a calculated lie. Those are the only options.
There is no "hook" to "let him off of" to begin with. Anyone willing to read such a milquetoast off-the-cuff estimate as a binding oath is not being reasonable.
I would rather them give soft estimates that they don't have to be raked over the coals for missing, than the likely alternative to these kinds of inquisitions, which is for them to say as little to us as possible. Would you prefer that?
That's a false dichotomy; in the other interviews he didn't say end of the year. Could've just stuck to that. No reason he'd have to go radio silent.
Which I think reads pretty clearly in my untrimmed comment. For the record, here's the relevant part to this aside:
Did he say "I swear on my life"? No, but he didn't have to say anything at all. Every detail that turns out to be false undermines the whole.
Y'know, just don't say specific dates if you're not actually trying to commit to actual dates. You and anybody else can choose to let him off the hook for this goof or not, but it is a goof. Either that or it's a calculated lie. Those are the only options. Now am I trying to say I never make similar mistakes? No, of course not, but I'm also not nearly in the same position. I'm barely making above minimum wage, you feel me? There's a different level of responsibility. And given the year WotC's had, I really just don't think they can afford any goofs at all. But that's just me.
PsyrenXY did not create a dichotomy at all—they gave two options, and said their unpreferred option was a “likely” alternative to their preferred—but by using the word “likely” they left open the possibility there were other possibilities as well. That, by definition, is not a dichotomy. Your missing a substantial and operative word, such as “likely” in PsyrenXY’s post is exactly the problem that gave rise to this thread—a lack of reading/listening comprehension resulting in missing very clear qualifiers which are keeping statements from being absolutes.
On the other hand, you said there were only two options—this being a goof or this being a calculated lie. That is a false dichotomy—there are plenty of other options, such as mistake, overestimating abilities, Wizards having tried to communicate in a meaningful way and circumstances just not going as planned, etc.
I cannot think of a better post to illustrate the problem Wizards’ PR team consistently ignores—that a subset of their players both struggles with receiving communication and aggressively lobs (hypocritical) allegations at the drop of a pin. This is precisely why Wizards should give an update—even if the update is “whoops, taking longer than we thought.”—they should know their players well enough by this point to know a vocal subsection apparently need constant hand holding.

Sure. So what do you say about the fact that they haven't given an update?

The lack of Wizards providing an update is also yet another example of Wizards' PR department displaying a shockingly naive understanding of some components of their player base's lack of literacy and communication skills. They really should know better--the OGL debate was riddled with individuals who apparently forgot the definition of "draft" and spent months (with some even still carrying this torch) perpetuating all manner of new definitions. It should have been expected a similar contingent of their players might equally have forgotten elementary definitions of words like "inclined", "want", "intention", and "think" or that phrases like "review", "work involved", and "have legal look at it" exist to temper expectations as to the expected return date.
WotC promised something, they didn’t follow through, and now people want an update. Sticking everyone in one broad category of “amnesiac illiterates that require constant hand-holding” is entirely uncalled for. No one is calling for heads on a stake, and we all understand that the leaked OGL was a draft — it’s just that it was a really lousy draft. Which, by the way, has been pretty much forgiven. Wizards, being the wonderful people they are, have done everything we asked for and more.
Anything and everything said in this thread is speculation, and until Kyle Brink shows up and says “we’re working hard on this, thanks for your patience,” there’s no need to flame everyone else in this way. Speculation is inherently flawed, and my speculation is every bit as valid as yours.
YouTubers are doing what YouTubers do — they clickbait, they farm attention and views. They do this to survive in the algorithm. Obviously, you should take everything a YouTuber says with a grain of salt. And equally obviously, this community doesn’t consist entirely of YouTubers trying desperately to promote their content. We all just want an update, brief as it may be. That’s not too much to ask.
Overall, this is certainly something players should ask about--Wizards does owe an update as they failed to meet the expected date.
Wait, you agree now? Great!
But there is going to be a contingent of the community that tries to paint Wizards as liars, as going back on their word, oathbreakers, or as crooked in some other way.
Oh, nevermind. So where are these people? I don’t see any on this thread. All I see is nice, civil people asking for updates in a nice, civil way. Hearing you say “stop painting people in a bad light, man!” is so ironic I can taste it.
What I’m trying to say is that unnecessary negativity isn’t helping anyone. It’s been a year (“constant-hand-holding”?), and WotC’s communication has been almost nonexistent. I’m pretty sure that isn’t normal, and I’m also pretty sure a gentle reminder isn’t going to hurt anybody.
So let’s be nice, and positive, and not call each other names. This community is better than that.
On the other hand, you said there were only two options—this being a goof or this being a calculated lie. That is a false dichotomy—there are plenty of other options, such as mistake,

Sure. So what do you say about the fact that they haven't given an update?
Goof, as a word, holds connotations of “silly, stupid, or daft” (per the Oxford English Dictionary. The word goes beyond simple mistake—it denotes some form of incompetence or idiocy on the part of the individual making the error. In the real world, mistakes are not always goofs—you can make a mistake because you did everything correct, but information or circumstances unknown to you resulted in your actions being an error when you have the benefit of hindsight. In the real world overestimating your abilities are not always goofs—you can reasonably expect your abilities arise to the challenge, and only later, once you get started and have more information, realise there was an error. The third point covers both those generally—the reality that you can do nothing wrong and circumstances result in a different outcome than you anticipated.
As for what I would say? I think I have been pretty clear on that—I think Wizards is making the same mistake they often do, forgetting that a vocal component of their player base have difficulty with basic communication. This loud group reads a guideline (I think we will do this by X date) as an absolute promise and tends to double down on their mistakes rather than admit “oh, maybe I was wrong.”
Wizards has lots of evidence as to this particular brand of player and the problems they can create by virtue of their volume, ability to see “facts” only in the light they want to see them, and refusal to admit to error. Getting behind the story, and allowing folks like that to get the first word in?
That I would consider a goof, from a PR team so prone to unforced error I think calling them “daft” is rather appropriate.

Indeed. Though I'd be hard-pressed to think of any kind of communication that would satisfy this contingent when they've already made up their minds to Be Mad.
I think "goof" but possibly also hamstrung. There were a number of matters (Pinkertons to AI to packaging) that likely distracted communications, plus a round of layoffs, so not having the last quarter update of the community update board at this point isn't surprising. More work and less staff happened, and WotC IIRC tends to go dark, like many companies do on the comms front during the winter holidays ... though they do seem to take a bit longer than most to turn the mic back on. My guess is the board, will be updated by months end or early Feb. I doubt anyone clamoring for expanded CC SRDs are going to be happy with the status, as it definitely looks to me that the new core and service to that community is a (fairly understandable) priority over the licensing or Creative Commons-ing of legacy editions.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
For what it's worth, I'm not so dense as to miss the fact that these mysterious unnamed people are, in fact, me. But I'm not Being Mad. My life is going great, and what Hasbro does really doesn't affect me. What I am "Being" is Unforgiving.
I'm not inclined to assume the best anymore. That's all, really. This company has forfeited receiving that kindness from me, and is now attempting to win it back. But it's not something they deserve -- it's not something they EVER deserved -- it's not something it's POSSIBLE to deserve. It's a gift. You feel me? I gave it to them once because I wanted to. I don't want to anymore. You, Caerwyn and Psyren, evidently still do. Carry on, then.

I guess I just gotta ask you to trust me that I meant it as a synonym for mistake. In particular I suppose you could say I intended a subtext along the lines of "and they should've known better." As you put it, an unforced error.
My preference is that they prioritize making the best core books they can this year. The apology tour list can wait, whatever Bob World Builder et al may think of that.
Rather than bite the hand that could feed you, why not make a fair deal.
Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast could release the original Open Game License 1.0 For use of the Standard Reference Document of the Third Edition ( 3.0E ) Basic Rules, the 3.5E SRD, the 4th edition they can have, and offer any 3rd party source that starts making more than 750k gross ( 425k net min )minimum profit at fair percentage a percentage of the D&D IP for use in creation of content that contains ONLY the IP held is used within the content and such IP held and defined in written form shall be defined as such.
after that, maybe the community and WotC can give MtG a run for its money?
The new post from Dan Ayoub made me think of this promise to release older editions into the Creative Commons and that they have still yet to deliver on it.
We should absolutely remember promises made and unfulfilled when Wizards goes around making new promises. Until some real follow-through is demonstrated, it's all just noise
However. Reminder: most of the people stridently calling for older editions to be placed into Creative Commons are doing so specifically so they can then sever Wizards from "their" D&D forever. They have, loudly and with great zeal, proclaimed that they will never play a game of 5e ever again, nor will any amount of effort on behalf of the company convince them to ever again purchase a Wizards product.
They want older editions in CC so they can hang Wizards the bird finger and disengage from the product-buying community forever. This is not strong incentive to follow through on a promise. The promise should be kept regardless, but if former customers are entirely unwilling to relent and become current customers again should the company do as they desire? Then the company has little choice but to abandon those former customers and find new ones.
If you take your wallet off the table forever, then WotC has no reason to care what you think. You have no bargaining power at all because you are unwilling to bargain. If you take your wallet off the table with the caveat that it comes back if the right moves are made, THEN you have bargaining power.

If you send the message "We don't honor our word to our customers" that kinda sends the message "we don't bargain, we can not be trusted." and that also can take wallets of the table, or at least stops people from putting them on the table to begin with.
If they wanted to keep the older edition players close, then they should put the ones not in the OGL, into the OGL, and then do some reprints. I just want to give 4E a try again, even when I am in multiple 2024 games. But there are no tools, there are not options, there is nothing but half battered books and someone's poorly put togeter google doc that can't keep numbers present for more than a day without wiping itself. Right now, they are doing NOTHING, with the bulk of the older editions.

Two things:
1) They have done something - you can "give 4e a try again" just fine without a SRD or "half-battered books", completely legally. All* the PDFs for it are on DTRPG for peanuts (a mere $10 for each of the three core books.) And the same is true for older editions too.
2) Since 4e never had a SRD to begin with (to my knowledge), they'll have to create one from scratch, unlike the others that had some kind of OGL release that they can crib from. That is not a trivial amount of work, so it's going to take time. I expect we'll get 3e in CC before 4e for that reason.
*A huge number of them at any rate; I have no way of knowing whether every single 4e sourcebook is up there but I see all the ones I remember.

Some will pick their wallet up and put it back on the table, but when wotc is so busy sawing half the legs off of the table by breaking promises that wallets are sliding off the table it is hard to find time to bargain when you're so busy trying to find your wallet among those in the pile on the floor.
