Wow just wow, all the wrong in this topic. As for the one comment of WotC coast waiting till 5th edition is almost dead then rolling the dice a 4th time, this is the 5th edition they already rolled the dice a 4th time. WotC bought D&D and they own access to the 1st and 2nd editions, 3rd folks had fun, as well as 4th and now 5th there will be a 6th one day. But I really cannot fathom the I own the real books give me the same for free lol. As for Dndbeyond selling the actual books and granting access here at the same time That's funny I live in Canada and shipping stuff here isn't free. I ordered the essentials kit from target when that came out shipping was more then the cost of the product so I said I'm waiting for Canadian sellers to get it. which meant for me a 3 month wait for that set.
As for "Give them the rules, let them buy the adventures", well that's literally what the Basic Rules are.
Its a nice gesture and introduction the game, but its not the full game so it does not really change the circumstances as they are today.
BR/SRD IS the full game. You absolutely do not need to spend a single penny on any of the official books to get the full experience of D&D, especially the DMG and MM. The PHB is not a great value either if you consider that the wider community produces a ton of homebrew options for free, and even Wizards themselves also make UA content available for free, and most published content are not very far off from their UA counterparts either.
This is like complaining about the need to spend money on every meta Yu-Gi-Oh deck to get the full experience of Yu-Gi-Oh, when there is absolutely no reason to do so and honestly almost no Yu-Gi-Oh player does. Most players who play Smash Ultimate or any other videogame do not buy every single DLC either, as the base game from most major videogame studios is complete by itself. D&D's base game is completely free, and I think people who demand more stuff for free are being ridiculous at this point, as these products require manpower to create and that manpower needs to be paid and compensated for. I do not think this level of entitlement from these people is right. I understand that money does not grow on trees, but PHBs, DMGs, and MMs certainly do not either. Businesses have employees that needs to be fed and cared for, and turning them to slaves and their offices into sweatshops is not an acceptable way to satisfy the unrealistic pricing demands of these people.
I'm pretty sure even the DMG and MM outsell adventures by an order of magnitude, particularly since most of he streams that are credited for D&D's current success run homebrew campaigns. Creating their own campaign is something almost every DM aspires to nowadays, even if not all take that step. As such, I can certainly see why relying on adventure sales by making the core books free might seem like a bad idea financially for WotC. Mechanics and crunch sell. That's why setting books have crunch too, and why FFG's model is to release books that are half adventure half sourcebook for Star Wars.

Also please don't use dog-ears it is disrespectful to the book and ruins it. I know it is like a book mark but please just go get a book mark for free from the library instead of ruining a book.
Heck, I actually write in them, cross things out, write replacement bits, etc., kinda like a pastor’s bible. Dog earing a few pages is the least of it.

This is what I thought at first too, just get the Masters sub. On there web page about it they make it seems like it unlocks everything. Though it doesn't, it just unlocks unlimited characters and the ability to share book you buy in addition to the subscription.
I've already bought the books in physical form, so thinking the master sub would fix this while I admit is a bit on my fault should have also been much more clearly layed out on the subscription page.
You should have a code with every phish call book, if wizards can do it for Pokémon card booster packs I don’t see why they can’t with a physical book -.-
Can also doesn't mean should. The whole booster pack thing is not comparable to sourcebooks and, once again, all things Pokemon belong to the same company while WotC and DDB are not in the same company trees. There are several reasons why blending physical and digital ownership of content is, if not impossible, difficult and possibly simply not worth the cost and hassle for WotC but DDB being a separate company with separate revenue streams remains the big one. It's quite possible things would be organized very differently if setting up a digital toolset was done now, knowing what the parties involved have learned over the past few years, but hindsight's 20/20 and the past can't be changed.
ok, then: “it would be pretty cool and would make a great value for my purchase if the physical item included a code redeemable for its counterpart on the official game companion app, logistically it doesent seem so hard, tho I understand that there might be problems because different people probably worked in different versions, still I can’t help to feel a bit cheated about the situation because most of that money is going to end up at hasbro anyway and I don’t particularly want to pay hasbro twice for essentially the same collection of game mechanics I already own, tho I understand that that the value of dnd beyond comes in the form of how convenient it is for creating and storing character etc”
You are absolutely free to hold that opinion, Kinopticon. Many people do.
The issue is that there is zip zero nada bupkis nothing anyone here can do about it. The average DDB forum user has as much ability to effect a drastic, fundamental shift in the business strategies of both DDB and Wizards of the Coast as I do of effecting a drastic, fundamental shift in the public perception of nuclear energy. And many forum regulars are beyond sick of explaining why to every last single person who starts up a DDB account expecting to get access to the entirety of D&D for absolute free. You may notice I put a link in my signature specifically pointing at the best thread I've found so far for explaining why people shouldn't start EVEN MORE(!!!) threads complaining about not being given free books for free.
It is super annoying and obnoxious to explain this over and over and over and over and

So if folks are going to keep complaining in the vain hope of getting DDB to give them free books for free (and thusly also going bankrupt and destroying everybody's service), those folks are gonna get sass from forum regulars who are absolutely through engaging with the subject.
Or, TL;DR: Don't like the answer? Tough. Keep fighting it and you'll unfortunately just end up ignored or relentlessly trolled because there's five digits' worth of people who've had this exact same fight before you and we're sick of it.
Hey thanks for your answer, it’s literally the first time I come to the forums so I was not aware that this was such a sore issue for the regulars, in defense for all other people tho, it’s not immediately obvious dnd beyond is a separate entity from wizards of the coast.
I wish that the burden of explaining this over and over and over, as you say didn’t have to fall upon the community and in sure as you say here is nothing we can do instead of discuss it at nausea which is worthless.
anyway I appreciate that you didn’t wrote to me like I was an idiot and hope all your saving throws are nat 20

OK WotC puts a special code in every book that is then taken and used to get the book here, but then DDB gets no money from it. Ya not gonna happen if they were the same company ya it could happen but they aren't the same.
No biggie. We all know what the issue is, and that many folks' first post is them asking why they can't have free books before they're more used to or knowledgeable about the forums.
The real issue is that we've tried everything to make this easier to find and understand. Everything. There used to be three separate sticky threads in three different sections of the forum most frequented by new players, maintained by the staff, explaining this issue. People have had copy/paste replies on lock waiting for this. Some forum regulars like myself have links in our signatures to some of those old sticky threads. None of it helped, or made any real appreciable dent in new questions on the subject. There's been a couple of weeks in recent memory where we've had over a dozen brand-new threads started on the issue from over a dozen brand new DDB users. It's not their fault, but they're also treading on the very last dregs of patience some regulars have and tend to get snapped at just because Oldies are sick of seeing it.
We can't stop people from asking. We've tried and tride to make the information easy to find, but short of a big popup on every new account's screen saying "WE AREN'T GONNA GIVE YOU FREE BOOKS FOR FREE BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT HARDCOVERS SO DON'T ASK" - which is an absolutely horrible idea from a business perspective - there's nothing we can do about it. Ah well. At least you're being a good sport about it, so thanks for that. Some folks are decidedly less so.

I think that's the biggest problem a lot of people erroneously assume DnDbeyond is WotC. The most unfortunate part is that it will never stop and people will keep thinking WotC is trying to double dip em.
I have all the physical books, just started paying for dndbeyond, thought it would make life easier.
First character I built was a cleric... domain options: Way of Light.
Are you kidding me?? At least hook us up with the complete phb core rules and options.
You want to gouge us for digital copys of all the expansions, knock yourself out. But thats absolutely ludacris.
And while im at it, equipping weapons and armor, is way more complicated than necessary.
This point has been debated endlessly, since DDB started. While there may be bundle options in the future, it's not going to change for books that have been already purchased. Your options are:
-not use DDB at all
-homebrew the elements you want to use, since you have the books
-purchase just what you need, piece by piece [what you spend is credited toward the purchase of the entire "book"]
-purchase entire "books"
If you want more info about the middle two choices, see the buyer's guide linked in my signature.
Note that you only need a subscription if you a) want unlimited characters or encounters, b) want to be able to use homebrew published by others or c)want to share purchased content with others in a campaign, Note that private homebrew is automatically shared within a campaign, whether or not any one has a subscription
You want to gouge us for digital copys of all the expansions, knock yourself out. But thats absolutely ludacris.
As Arwen said, this has been discussed and explained numerous times before. If you want an explanation, then you can look at any of the 60+ replies on a thread like this.
Very helpful Mellie thanks. I'm still on the fence, early excitement soured quickly with the prospect of buying the digital content on top of a monthly sub. I'll tinker with it more but I am not seeing the value in a subscription with book/piece purchases. Is there ever a Black Friday or "catch up digital bundle" sale?
