Sorry, odd place for this, but I need to know. Was there ever a smaller version of the 5e Players handbook made? I was hoping for a book smaller than its current size that I can more easily fit into a small satchel to carry around. I know I could just use my phone, but I like having a book with me. I guess I was hoping just for like a pocket sized cliff note version of the handbook that's easier to carry around with me.
I think that's something to look into. Hate always having to carry that book around. Would be nice to at least have a very condensed version of the manual for quick info on things.
There was a toy company that made miniature books for 1E and some of the box sets. They are long out of print and more of a collectible. You can find them for sale on eBay occasionally. I know of nothing similar for 5E but wish someone would step up and make them again and take my money.

Roll the dice and play the game, I’m not here to listen to your politics.
“But this isn’t right. You’re meant to charge in, sword drawn, banner flying-that’s what all the other knights did!” “Yeah, right before they burst into flame.”
I'm finding that I can get all the information I need from D&D Beyond my smart phone, without having to grab my PHB. :)
This approximates my experience as well. I've brought the books with me, but nearly all the monsters, spells, and magic items I needed to reference were here. I can't wait for launch so that my group can build their characters!
As an aside, I've been using the website on my android phone - I added it to my home screen so it looks and feels like an app - as well as my chromebook. My chromebook runs many android apps, and I hope that I will be able to install and run the mobile app on my chromebook as well when it becomes available so that I will have the offline access of the app on a laptop screen.
welp, when my new hip satchel gets in, guess I'll have to find an old phone or tablet small enough to fit in it so I can use the 5e quick reference guide app :/
I wish I could make a request to Wizards of the coast for this too. I think a lot of people who like collecting books or keeping them around would appreciate having a smaller version of the players handbook or dungeonmaster's guide on them. I happen to work in a building where I am not allowed to bring in my phone but I am allowed to carry a book on me. Likewise, there are times when I am at a game and I would like to have the PHB on me and open to read but having my phone on the whole time would drain the battery in a four hour + session and my group is seven strong huddled around a dining table, so cracking open a whole tome is kind of inconvenient.
Sometimes you're out of cell range or nowhere near a recharge socket and just want a book. I too would love a more compact players guide you could carry around.

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a "travel size" version of most D&D books in general.
There were certainly travel size versions of some of the Pathfinder books (d20 system), but never seen or heard of any for official D&D rulebooks.

the closest they came were the essential books for 4e.

Do you have a phone? You can get it in its entirety if you download the dndbeyond app on your phone, then download the PHB.
I want the book for times when I don't have access to my phone, that and just to have a physical book.
Agreed. An Android tablet and the DNDBeyond app. It runs offline, so you can take it places without Internet access.
