I like to play my character to the height of usefulness and then I heavily role play my game. This may not be your cup of tea, but to each their own.
If you take human variant, then go warlock. Take a three level dip in Warlock, Pact of the Tome, and choose The Great Old One.
"Awakened Mind
Starting at 1st level, your alien knowledge gives you the ability to touch the minds of other creatures. You can telepathically speak to any creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You don’t need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language."
And if you take Devil's Sight eldritch invocation it states:
"Devil’s Sight: You can see normally in darkness, both magical and non-magical, to a distance of 120 feet."
Now, since you can see in both normal and magical darkness, this says to me that you have dark vision to 120 feet and sight that can see in magical darkness to 120 feet.
What do you think?
Also, choosing the great old one, would be an excellent way for a wild shaped druid to communicate to party members (and some animals to have a language). A bit of a story to explain how a druid would want to take a dip in warlock though. :-)

Devil's Sight is not Darkvision. It just means magical darkness is treated the same normal darkness for your sight. If you had darkvision, for example, your normal sight would normally not work in magical darkness because magical darkness blocks darkvision. However, if you also had Devil's Sight, your darkvision now works in magical darkness like it was normal darkness.
Look at creature's such as Imp that specifically state they have both Darkvision and Devil's Sight. It's worded differently because it's a stat block rather than an optional class feature, but it demonstrates that you need both.

I see how you came to that conclusion by reading the Devil's Sight invocation (I re-read it after seeing your post and thought the same thing). This does not appear to be the case however at least not RAI, according to Crawford you treat all vision out to 120' as bright light.
I looked into a bit since I'd never heard of or seen anyone ruling it the way you mentioned.
If you have devils sight, but not darkvision, you can see in darkness (magical and mundane) as if it were bright light, but dim light is still dim light. Yes, this ironically makes you able to see in darkness better than you can see in dim light, but it is magic and that's the rule.
Well, the imp having both dark vision and devil's sight seems to make the point. Did not know of any instance where both were mentioned. So, as Ghostwidow mentioned you would have to modify the plan to taking a level of sorcerer to get darkvision. Thanks for the discussion!

1 level of shadow sorcerer gets you darkvision as well.
