So, we know you can create characters and custom items and all sorts of things. Basic information from PHB/SRC is integrated into all of this. You can create a campaign or join one, or both.
But, what is after that? Do we then all meet in RL and sit around a table? Share our presence on Roll20 so we can actually see maps and our tokens? Roll dice? Or is all of this also integrated here?
I can't see the point of having a central content source and adding players to a campaign if we then have to go somewhere else to play. If we can play here, how does it compare to other experiences? Integrated audio/video? Virtual table?

This is more a table top aid, though can be used in conjunction with Roll20 and FG is you wanted to. There is no plan at this time to incorporate a VTT type functionality, though I do believe they are trying to work with the VTT vendors at making their character sheets compatible so that you could import your DDB character in to a Roll20 / FG campaign.
The tools in DDB are meant to enhance your play experience whether it's on a VTT, over Skype, in Discord, or in person. Integration with many platforms are coming such as importing characters into a VTT and twitch integration so that live character/monster stats are shown. I've even heard that we might be able to use tooltips such as magic missile in nearly every online platform (tweeting, facebook, outside forums, reddit, etc..)

By [Insert Name Here]'s grace, let it not be so!
I am, as usual, horrified by the thought of Facebook getting even more [insert word here because my brain isn't working].

Think of this particular fortification as gentrifying Facebook. Instead of Magic Missile - Blah Blah Blah, you get a simple link with a formatted and well designed tooltip when you put your mouse on it. Basically invisible until you show interest. If this gets extended to custom content, that could be even cooler.
The alternative is a wall of (possibly inaccurate) text. Information is web 3.0, and I am all for it.

I like that, to a point. I appreciate that all of us sitting around a table can have this wealth of information at our fingertips, and it would likely be faster to search than the PHB. But online Beyond is going to have a lot of competition, and take down notices aren't going to solve everything. Right now, I would rather use Roll 20. I get a lot of the same resources, and in some ways a lot more, for creating and managing my character. And the campaign management, maps, etc just bring it to a whole new level.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Roll20 is another partner, much like Curse. The fact that there's multiple platforms out there for fans of D&D to use is awesome. What's even better is that the partners are going to all work together to integrate DDB into their own systems. ;) You might prefer Roll20, but you're going to see a lot of D&D Beyond influence begin to spread over to it.

I hope so. I think that is what makes it. Especially if I can launch a campaign from here and have DDB access a linked account on Roll 20 or elsewhere. Or even in the other direction.
