No, you cannot. You have to take the short rest for that to take effect. i I just tick a box red, and close that dialog, then go reopen it, the box is unticked, not red anymore. So, unless I am missing something, you are incorrect about that. Happy to learn more if you want to explain more.
Yes, I see that you are right. I thought they were like spell slots and other long/short rest abilties that appear to save when you check or uncheck them. So, you have to see what current abilties you have used that are affected by short rest, check off the hit dice you want to use or remove, leave max HP reset unchecked. Select and confirm short rest and recheck off short rest abilties used.
There does not appear to be a way to just change the hit dice availability on it's own as you note.
I'm passing for this exact issue right now. And I would really think is a must fix. It's creating a really bad experience with the sheet for haveing to confirm what you have used, for them to take a short rest in the middle of combat and then mark them again.
Yeah I was trying to adjust my sheet because my DM gave me an item that doubles my hit dice and there is no way to put it onto my digital character sheet
please resolve this issue, it is effecting paying customers game play, and additional toggle box to decouple the other short rest features could fix this issues.
With all the additional spells, features, and items that now leverage hit dice as a resource, there isn't really an excuse for them to still not have this functionality.
Please fix this. How am I supposed to track hit die I spent with Lifedrinker invocation? Four years and this is still an issue. Doesn't the dev team ever read these or is a manual save button for short rest menu too difficult to code?
I'm noticing so many ding dang doodley erros on the site lately... and they're things that have been known about for over five years. Makes it hard to get excited about future products and releases...🥲

I need to be able to change how many hit dice a character has available without taking a short rest. Is there a way to do that?
You can use the Short Rest interface withou actually confirming a Short Rest. Just tick or untick the boxes.

Me thinks it’s a big enough deal. Finding myself in a similar situation. Fix your ding dang Short Rest box, code monkey.

Given that there is a feat (for dwarves) that lets them use hit dice outside of a short rest, this needs to be fixed.

It's not right. :/
Same issue, for a magic item. Wish the hit dice didn't reset if I canceled out a short rest, even that would be an acceptable workaround.
Have started tracking them in notepad, which seems to defeat the purpose of D&D Beyond.

Just bumping this because it's still an issue I would love solved.
Bump as well
bump as well, for all the reasons above and others, this needs to be fixed.

why is this still an issue?
