I like Wizard, because you can pretty much choose any background and it will makes sense. You can also make pretty much any kind of spellcaster from a Wizard. Plus who wouldn't want to cast fireball at 5th level?
Just sayin'... a Light Cleric can cast Fireball at 5th level. And wear armor. And heal.
Just sayin'.

Tayn of Darkwood. Lvl 10 human Life Cleric of Lathander. Retired.
Ikram Sahir ibn Malik al-Sayyid Ra'ad, Second Son of the House of Ra'ad, Defender of the Burning Sands. Lvl 9 Brass Dragonborn Sorcerer + Greater Fire Elemental Devil.
Viktor Gavriil. Lvl 20 White Dragonborn Grave Cleric, of Kurgan the God of Death.
I picked Sorcerers as my favorite. Despite the class’s shortcomings, this has hands down been my absolute favorite class to play in 5e as well as 3.5 and 4e. I just love the thematics of what a Sorcerer is and never tire of coming up with different backstories for the various subclasses and how my characters discover their magical gifts.
Artificers and Rangers are tied as my second pick. I love the sheer versatility of the Artificer and feel like an accomplished member of my party no matter what build I made for mine Magic-tech masters. Rangers are just so much fun thematically for me despite the classes shortcomings and they can be very versatile and creatively fun if you are willing to put in work with them.
Third place goes to the Warlock, another fun and thematic class with a ton of options to make some fun and interesting characters.
Really though, outside of the Wizard, I find every other class to have their strengths and they all have sparked by excitement and creativity in some form or another.
Mechanically I think the warlock is easily the most interesting class in 5e. They have a lot of choices to make and a lot of cool things that get unlocked as they level up. I also enjoy that they are quite restricted, meaning that you have to be creative with your solutions... They also have a cool... "double subclasses" feature, where you get to pick both a patron and a boon, both of which have a large impact on the way your warlock will play. The only thing I don't like about warlocks mechanically is that they are short rest dependant. This ia personal preference, but I don't like short rests.. It's sort of an awkward mechanic to me because a few members of the party will constant want to take short rests, while other members won't need to at all..
Ive only played a fairly low level warlock myself, but the fact that two warlocks have the mechanical freedom to feel like almost entirely different classes is awesome to me.
Some classes are "Easy mode" , like Paladin and Wizard. I like playing "Hard mode". Hence Warlock's, or the other end of the spectrum, Scout Rogues, with zero magical abilities.
Not to be t h a t guy but like-- Fighters are always fun to play,, in my opinion that is. I prefer slicin' and dicin' instead of just mass immolation
Well, most of the time anyway-

Artificer, but sadly it is not included in the poll.

I usually gravitate towards half-casters. Artificer is right up my alley, Bard and Ranger are pretty close too. I'll play anything though.
Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].

Warlock and wizard for the customization and versatility.
Also fighters are fun. And no fighter does not make a character plain. Personality and rp make a character plain.
