D&D 1e and 2e Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings were classes. It wasn’t until AD&D that they started the race+class system.
I could be wrong but I believe in the original books, class and race were separate. It was the Basic Set (red box) that turned the 3 demi-human races into classes.
I actually need to get around to buying the old stuff on DriveThruRPG so I have it.
I have this dream idea that I know will never happen... to build a kind of "points of light" world, old school, "build as you go" kind of thing (start with a small area and build out as we do the adventurers). And then to run a series of campaigns (I call it "a campaign of campaigns). The first one would be full-on "three little books" 1975 D&D, to level 10. Then we retire that group and in the same world, do AD&D, then after that do 2e AD&D, then 3 or 3.5e, then 4e, then 5e (and by then probably 6e, LOL). Each campaign would expand upon the world and live in the world of the previous ones.
I think it would be awesome, but I don't think anyone I know would want to play the older editions. As one friend of mine says, I am "Captain Nostalgia." Not everyone has fondness for the old school.
But of course THEY ARE WRONG! Now get off my lawn.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
I have a Roman Empire campaign going right now and they just hit level 4. And there is no way I could run multiple campaigns at once.
On the other hand if someone wants to take that idea and DM it, I would be down to play it. Otherwise... it's probably gonna be years before I could actually do it.

I always wanted to actually play Tomb of Horrors in AD&D. We never did get a party to high enough level.
2 friends and I did it co-op as a NWN module we downloaded from the Vault years ago. It was brutal but super fun. We wiped and reloaded a lot from a save-game. LOL.

Tomb of Horrors on 2e was glorious, very fun for me as the DM... They were high enough level that it wasn't as deadly as it could have been but still instilled the fear of Acerak into them.
Hey guys, so I took it upon myself to set up my own Discord in the end and am planning to run some games over it. If anyone is interested let me know in a PM.

Adventure's I've published on DMs Guild: The Temple of Bhaal - A gothic horror themed "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters. The Palace of Evendur - An ethereal fairy tale "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters.
Does anybody know any discord servers dedicated to old school dnd such as the basic to expert sets or the becmi Basic sets. Looking for a discord server that hosts games as I really wanna scratch that old school dnd itch. Any information would be appreciated.
Wish I could help you, but I don't know any of them, at least not International ones.
Anyway if you don't find anything with BECMI or D&D 1e as search tags, you can try with some retro-clone ones like Dark Dungeons (I am playing it right now and it's just like BECMI's Rules Cyclopedia, but much better organized, and it's a free downloadable pdf file)
No, there was the red and gold box sets, and then 1st edition long before 2nd came out. I used to love playing those. Being an Elf or a dwarf used to be your character class as well as your race.
I was introduced to D&D in 80. First adventure was The Keep on the Borderlands. I fell in love with D&D at that session. I missed the previous edition that only had Fighting Man, Cleric and Magic User...no thieves/rogues.
Oh man... goldenrod character sheets, lead mini figs, Saturday mornings at the Bellevue game shop behind the 7-11 browsing (wishing for the gold box dwarf set), afternoons in the basement with friends/brothers arguing about who it was that was supposed to have brought along the 10' pole...
I could go on, but I think I hear those pesky kids out on my lawn again.
I jumped at the ability to choose class separate to race when first moving to AD&D. But looking back, I think race as class was more thematic. An elf fighter ought to play differently to a human fighter, for example, to emphasize the difference in training and techniques.
If you want to try basic you can get the Cyclopedia as it has all the sets combined into a single searchable PDF.

That sounds like a super fun campaign.
I would play that.

That does look like fun! But Rome first.
... and with rotating DMs so you get to play too?
Rotating DMs can help yes.

Me, this morning: oh neat, a thread where I can pretend I'm not a 5e noob who has 1 year of experience because I read the AD&D PHB pdf.
Me, now: wait what? two pages of disscussion over AD&D and the inferior version in this little time!
PS BioWizard, i would run an early edition game if my friends weren't scarred from tomb of horrors (5e), and if scheduling was at all possible :(

You might want to check out Old School Essentials.

You might want to consider Labryrinth Lord

And Hobbit...whose name had to be changed to Halfling due to obvious reasons...
Dark Dungeons...Classic Jack Chick pamphlet.....lol
