Can we get a sidekick creator like the character creator? I think that would be awesome! I just got a sidekick in game but with no creator for it. I mean I don't mind using the books but I think it would be awesome to have one! What do you guys think?
Why would we need a creator for them? Just go to Extras on the character sheet and add the sidekick you want and then add some customization to it. Easy peasy and convenient!

This is something the team is aware of a desire for and is being looked into. For the time being it's recommended you use the homebrew tools to apply sidekick levels to existing monsters. That's what I do, and although a little time consuming, it works well.

Those sidekicks already found in the Extras menu are from Dragon of Icespire Peak and the follow up adventures. They are pre-made sidekicks, the OP is referring to making sidekicks using the rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which includes rules for apply sidekick levels from 1 to 20 to any creature of CR 1/2 or lower
Ah yeah... I figured that would be expanded at some point. I do like having them as Extras though, easy to pull up and use instead of another full blown character.
Coming in to say I would love for there to be a builder for this. I'm running a one on one campaign with my girlfriend and she currently has two sidekicks (and will probably gain a 3rd later on).
This would be especially useful in the encounter builder. Currently I have them as homebrew monsters and add then in as enemies. It would be nice though to have an easy way to both level them up, and to have them more permanently in when balancing encounters.
It works currently but it's VERY clunky. Especially for the spellcasters.

Honestly, I'm interested why the sidekicks haven't been updated to add level 13-20 after the release of Tasha's.
Because the existing sidekicks in the system are from Dragon of Icespire Peak, and Tasha’s sidekicks are not the same. With the advent of Tasha’s, they decided that to continue to use the kludge of creating monster statblocks for such things wasn’t feasible—they would be filling up the monsters sections with things that weren’t actually monsters. (It wasn’t just sidekicks; Tasha’s added a number of subclasses with “pets”) Plus, Tasha’s rules allow for sidekicks to start from a wide range of races AND beasts, then add class features. (One of my players, for example, has a wolf warrior sidekick).
While we wait for a sidekick system (which they hope to build eventually), I’m doing what was suggested above: homebrewing sidekicks. As homebrew goes, it pretty easy, as attacks, features, etc. Are almost all just text blocks. The only tricky thing is the formatting for making the dice notations rollable, but there’s a handy spreadsheet another user made that creates that “code” for (generic) you.
The lack of some robust functionality here, is one of the key reasons I'm not using DnD Beyond for running any of my current campaigns.
It's infinitely faster to just print out a hardcopy template and fill in the blanks, than to continuously create, then update, relevant Sidekick statblocks. Particularly as low-tier parties level up rapidly.
I use as much technology as I can at my tables, but only if they make the relevant task(s) more efficient. For such a useful, well designed, and simple, game feature I've found the current implementation for sidekicks to be cumbersome, and lacking a great deal of flexibility.
my character has a tortle warrior sidekick who died fighting auril frostmaiden in icewind dale. R.I.P. indor. my friends sidekick accidentally stumbled onto a pedestal giving 5th level spells. have any of you done the icewind dale adventure with a sidekick?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
me fred.
Me also like seven hundred other characters that I don´t want to go through.
I am currently writing a collection of short stories called ¨tales from the pocket realm.¨
Look how long its been since this was brought up. This was a known issue before they even released the damn book, so they are either ignorant of it (unlikely) or don’t care (likely…seeing as it hasn’t been done over a year later.)
It’s not as if these forums actually result in positive change anyway.[REDACTED]
Did a builder get made? Love that idea. The last post here was a year ago, is it still in the works?
I’m sure it’s still on the roadmap/future plans. They never promised it was coming soon. They have a LOT of things on the “to do” list, many of which require rebuilding huge chunks of the backend/core of the system. That rebuilding takes time because they are tinkering with a live system and can’t take it down for the rewrite. It is also my assessment (from the outside, as a customer with some database experience, but no programming/coding experience) that when they built the original, system, they didn’t not build in much flexibility. One of the main developers said a year or more ago that when they first built DDB, they built it on/in infrastructure that was near obsolete at the time. They knew that, but it was what they had at the time. It has come back to haunt them, and they’ve been slowly untangling the monolith and building out mini services with more flexibility, but it takes time. More time than any of us are happy about.

Following up on this before a year passes if possible?

How/Would you add the homebrewed sidekick to the PC sheet under "Extras?"

@TNVic@dice.camp
Once you have homebrewed it, add using the "misc" category.

YES YES YES, a side kick creation system is needed!!!
+1. Especially, after the August 9, 2021 article talking about the power and utility of the sidekick, DDB team needs to support this.
Another +1 to this feature, please.

Frequently flippant; sorry for being an apologist.
Boost. 💯 💯
