Howdy do there, my fellow nerds and goblins, I have come to drop a bit of a recommendation here.
First of all, I will say that this Paid Campaign is one of the more affordable I have found for the quality it provides. Prepared maps, lore sheets, and tid-bits of information that can be found throughout the game helps you be better immersed into the world proper. I am personally on the Tiger Team and I am having a blast with our DM Burnz! The effort all the DMs put into each campaign and side-quest is honestly astonishing.
I will even say that you can have ideas that are somewhat out there, and they are able to help steer your idea in a direction that fits with the lore of the setting and is just as interesting. Without a doubt I look forward to every Monday because of this server- and cannot recommend this enough.
But even if the idea of paying for a campaign is a bit steep? They have a multitude of free 'Quests' which are cute little one-shots. Throughout this month I -think- there are a lot more than usual scheduled as a little holiday gift for the server. They even started up some Pathfinder 2e Quests and are working on a 2e campaign as well! (Which I am personally excited for).
Both Myself and my Husband have joined Dragonworks, and we play with the same team. He joined around 6 months ago, and I joined 2 months ago. We've been playing for about 7 years, and DMing for 5 of those. We are both avid roleplayers in our games and live for the story we tell with the groups we are in.
I wanted to jump in and add a review of our combined experiences. It is true that the Dragonworks games do have the potential to share the same pitfalls of a traditional D&D game, but there are quite a few outstanding traits that make this group stand out above the majority. I'll explain our views for both the pros and cons of Dragonworks and our general attitude towards the group.
Some Pros:
Minimized Scheduling conflicts- the game is set at a particular time and runs even if some of the players can't attend. The are times were a session may be canceled, but notice is given well in advance.
Better player buy in- if you pay for a game, generally you will want to get the most out of it. Player engagement can be hard to come by, but in my experience generally paid games are going to get more players that want to RP and really get into the story.
DM preparedness- Derailment is always an option, but the DM's at Dragonworks seem to have plans in place to make sure even the wildest of turns get pulled into the main story and incorporated for the fun.
Cons:
You gotta pay for it.
Like any D&D game that is played online with a group of strangers, Dragonworks puts you in a group with strangers. You get to choose your team, but unless you have friends already playing, you will be playing with strangers. This can be hit or miss for playstyle conflicts, personality conflicts, game expectation conflicts, and conflicts in general. Being a paid game does not eliminate that risk. The difference is in how Dragonworks manages that risk. My husband was a player who did experience a 'not so great' time in the first team he had joined. There was a conflict about 15 sessions in that he felt needed to be addressed. In a normal game, the only recourse is to hash that out with the group and hope that everyone can come to an understanding. In Dragonworks, talking things out like adults is still the default, however the DM's are trained to stop conflict before it can begin whenever possible, then to mediate if something gets out of control. If that fails, the upper leadership of Dragonworks is more than happy to step in to resolve things in a way that makes everyone as happy as possible. My Husband was offered multiple options of resolving the issues he was experiencing, and it was He who decided to join another team. I am happy to report that he was very satisfied with that resolution, and recommended Dragonworks to me during that time.
My experience with Dragonworks has been positive overall, the DM we have has been great at listening to any concerns or questions I've brought to him. I used to hate Roll20 and swore I'd never play a game that used it again.....and well I was mistaken. I didn't hate Roll20. I hated playing in games where the DM didn't know how to use it. Every DM we've played with has shown a mastery of Roll20. The Grand Campaign has shown me how fun of a VTT Roll20 can be when used by someone with the knowledge to use the VTT to the fullest. I currently run Fantasy Grounds in my own game and am heavily debating swapping to Roll20. The maps are interesting and well designed, the line of sight and fog of war are balanced to give the players enough visuals to keep them engaged while not revealing everything at once. I even feel like the soundtracks have been vetted to get the most mood into the scenes as they are occurring. The story has been engaging and exciting, and is customized for each party and player in the individual teams. There has been plenty of RP, and the combat is challenging but doesn't turn into a slog or a grind. It's obvious that our DM has been trained to cater to a variety of playstyles, and he rotates through them to ensure that all the players are getting something they enjoy in each game. I consider myself a bit of a picky player, and I am truly having fun with my game and my team here at Dragonworks.
Looks like I will be the first one to respond. I have been playing on two of the Dragonworks teams, Shinobi and Jabberwock, with two very different teams and approaches to gameplay. Even though the two groups are in different versions (Pathfinder vs 5e) and the other players are at different levels of experience (one group has many new players while the other has many players with at least a year or two of experience) the experience has been consistently positive.
I myself have played tabletop games for over a decade now, starting with Shadowrun and going into many different games including multiple D&D editions, Pathfinder, FATE, Maid RPG (yes, that one), Underworld, and more. Across the years, I have had amazing DMs and players, terrible DMs and players, overly indulgent DMs, selfish and selfless players, and played as a DM for more campaigns than I care to (or regret to) remember.
In the roughly 2 months I have played on the teams at Dragonworks, I have had quite a few surprises and experiences that say a lot for the group. The first thing that I noticed is that while each group has a freedom to how it plays, there is a lot of underlying work put into the campaign and considerations. An entire world has been shaped which helps to give a framework for many of the choices which the players may make and allows for a flexibility around the main goal. On top of this, backgrounds are taken into consideration and are woven in to emphasize the players' experiences and allow for unique interactions to let people really become immersed in the character they have created. I invited a friend of mine to play in one of the groups and his character had a very negative conflict with one of the nobles in his past. When the party pressed for us to talk with the noble, the DM had us meet the noble and watch him slowly revert into a repulsive drunken fool, which my friend very much enjoyed shoving away.
Across my years, the main three things I look for in a good group are: 1. combat with good balance and clever use of challenges, 2. rp which involves the player and makes them think, and 3. a steady flow where the players feel useful between scenes rather than just 'waiting for the important events'. The world provided and the DMs I have experienced have helped to answer each of these three points. While it can be hard to deal with groups that can reach up to 6 players, the DMs chosen (at least the two I have experienced thus far) handle them quite well. For a bit of knowledge in regard to the posts above (I always read other posts out of curiosity) the DMs actually have more than one 'ranking' which I believe is usually rated based on review of their abilities by the Dragonworks team and may be changed with experience in the future.
Anyways, as it is always important to offer the good with the bad, my only main criticism I would say are more observations for how firm they are in regard to their expectations of the quality of their work. I myself have written many campaigns in the past and led players, but much of my experience has also been flexible and built with improvisation as a cornerstone once the main world is shaped. I offered this to their mods, and they told me they would want it to be more built out so it could be run without requiring the improvisation skills. For the Dragonworks group, they want to make sure anything that is created to be used by their teams can be handed off as-is for a DM to run. While improvisation and enhancement are allowed (within reason of course), there is a firmly set outline to make sure that the materials presented to players meets a standard of quality for the benefit of the players and DM.
I can't speak for the entirely of the group beyond what I have experienced, but I can say that the community does seem to be positive overall and very supportive of one another. While players may not always get along and some DMs may not be the right fit, there is always an open sense of communication if you do need to reach out. If you are comfortable with the cost of the sessions and possibly joining a group that may already be established in their relations, I would say to give a group a try. It may take a bit of time to learn about just how much has happened by the time you join, but many of the players there are looking for people to have fun with and are happy to spend the time catching up.
Overall, I can say that Dragonworks has a very refined outline for their system as well as the training they give their DMs before they even allow them to start running campaigns. It has been very positive for me, and I do look forward to seeing where the grand campaign goes next.
Hey all, Roach from Team Kraken here at Dragon Works. I have been a player on the Dragonworks Grand Campaign for the last 8 months. I am an experienced player of 5e for over 2 years and 6 campaigns outside Dragonworks. My time in the Grand Campaign has been incredible with the group and also our fantastic DM, Euran. Euran is the most consistent DM I have ever played under and he has inspired all of us as players to continue to push the story. My team has accomplished some amazing things in the Grand Campaign and we are excited every session to drive into the world. Hannu, the owner of Dragonworks, is always ready and willing to receive feedback or help resolve any issues. I have personally brought issues to him to take the feedback constructively, Despite being the owner of over 20 teams and 3 different systems under the server: he makes it a point to get back to me whenever possible. Even if I disagree on a rule or occurrence of them, my concerns are always heard. The staff of Dragonworks is no different in my interactions with the admins or other DMs.
Pros Outstanding DMs Well organized groups Constant support with characters and very concise character creation rules. Exceptionally developed lore with great art
A unique Integrated card system that can make insane things possible and often hilarious.
Cons No free feat at level one Mileage with house rules can vary
I fully recommend any player, casual or serious, to take part in the free quests or the paid grand campaign at Dragonworks. My experience has been exceptionally positive and most importantly consistent.
I have had no bad experience with the server ,and am VERY PLEASED with all the fine people I have encountered. just wish there were more like these on the internet . All the dm's are well versed in the games they run . THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I'D PAY TO ENJOY A GAME!!!
I’ve been playing in one of these campaigns for a couple months now it it has totally renewed the fire in me to play dnd. I’ve been so lucky to have a great DM and even greater team mates. Many nights have been spent laughing and crying and it was all possible because of dragonworks! I haven’t even got the chance to play in the free quests, but I’ve heard they are equally as fun as the grand campaign.
Hey there, I go by Mr. Context on Discord and most other places.
I am a member of Rex team and have been for... almost 5 months I'd say. I've loved and enjoyed every session that I've taken part in, despite other circumstances outside of mine or the DM's control, everything has been quite pleasant.
My character's status and backstory, those he has been connected to, all taken into account. Our DM even took time to ask us if, who, and where our characters would have connections in the large city we came across.
So the time I have had in Dragonworks as been pretty amazing so far. The DM just had us fight a really interesting boss and great rp all around us. I would highly recommend the community and the dungeon masters here.
Howdy do there, my fellow nerds and goblins, I have come to drop a bit of a recommendation here.

Awesome review! Thanks Nardlerd! If there's anything you need, let me know!
11/10 IGN Joined the campaign a year ago and loving it still. Love the campaigns you've been making and can't wait to see what goodies you've got in store in this one. Always had fun in your games and from what I've heard of the stuff you and your crew have been putting into this one then I feel like it'll be great. One of the best gm's I've had the pleasure of being under.
Beerfiends funny adventures in Legacy of Alabastar:
"Dear Diary, I am happy to announce my ability to cross the following things of my bucket list: --Biting a goddess --Winning a Dance contest as a member of 2 oppressed minorities as the same time, receiving further improvements to my epic squat dancing skillz! --Getting extremely fabulous anime protagonist hair laced with carnivorous plants that destroy swarms on account of a raw wild mana surge --Winning a Rap-Battle with an undead horse --Outdrinking an entire garrison of slavers"
Out of character, the GM is very dedicated, the preparation and presentation is top notch, and doesnt have to hide or shy away from official contest in the slightest. If I have a chaotic idea, the answer is typically "yes and you also...", the GM also went the extra mile to create relations between our characters and the story as a whole. We kind of all have "personal quests" in addition to the main one.
Having played a series of RPGs in person over the last few decades, moving to playing online was a hard change for me, but one that I had to make to keep enjoying something I love.
Finding a good party to play with is always hard, but having to adapt to this new reality seemed even harder. However, Dragonworks and the incredibly kind people running it made my dream possible. Every odd request I had, they looked after with genuine interest. They really accommodate my every need and I now play DnD with a stellar group of people.
Beyond that, the community they've created is nothing short of amazing. From people sharing their real life adventures to artists producing amazing characters.
I believe if you want to play DnD this definitely the right place, but it goes way beyond that and I would encourage others to participate simply to make your life better. There's just a really positive energy that will uplift you.
Whatever way you decide to go on your journey, I wish you the best!
I’ve been a member of Dragonworks for almost 1 year now as a member of Griffin Team. It’s been a wondrous ride with fantastic people in the world with the most to explore. I would definitely recommend Dragonworks to anyone looking for a long-term campaign that’s been meticulously quality controlled to give you the best experience possible.
The Quests are no slouch, either! If you currently don’t have the time or the revenue to play in the Grand Campaign, Quests are a great alternative to bring a little Dragonworks DnD into your life. Free-To-Play, Quests are one-shots where you keep your spoils of war and bring them with you into your next Quest. To those with a bit more experience, you may recognize the term West March. To those without, imagine a DnD multiplayer online role-playing game (or at the very least, the closest you can get).
Now, you may be wondering if everything I’ve said isn’t all exaggerated and subjective. Well, to that I say, come! Try it out! You don’t have to stay if you don’t want to, but we welcome all potential new members with the utmost zeal.
And honestly, playing DnD with the people of Dragonworks is just really fun. I like it.
A bit of background on myself. I started playing 5e at the onset of the pandemic and quickly found myself swept up in this wonderful hobby. I began immediately as a DM, without the benefit of observing other DMs at work, teaching myself the nuances of game and immersing myself in both official and third party content. Months went by and restrictions were lifted and weekly sessions became monthly sessions became quarterly sessions, but I couldn't possibly live with that amount of D&D.
Enter "the" Dragonworks.
I was a bit hesitant at first, I had heard of paid campaigns but my thoughts were that D&D should be something played between friends and not a service. Though, what did I have to lose? I'd give it a try and if it wasn't the experience I was hoping for I'd bow out graciously, thankful for the opportunity to play.
Almost 9 months later and wow, am I ever glad that I joined this wonderful community. I am member of Leviathan Team, and our DM is the incomparable Euran. Having a dedicated group show up week in and week out and share in these memorable and exciting stories has exceeded even my highest expectations. And it's all thanks to Hannu and the gang at Dragonworks. This isn't a service that you sign up for and then you're left to your own devices. Dragonworks is a community that offers all kinds of support and resources. From drop-in one shots to artists to casual chats about the hobby, there really is a ton of value to be found in this community.
As someone who worked in the recreation industry for nearly 20 years, I acutely understand that some things aren't for everyone and that you can't make everyone happy. And at the end of the day, D&D is a game played by human beings, and some may join and leave or not like the way a fellow player or DM has behaved. But this certainly isn't unique to Dragonworks, it's a challenge that any table can be faced with. I will say that in the face of these challenges, Dragonworks has always acted with integrity and compassion.
I will also say that the relationships between our party members is maybe the greatest benefit of this community. Our team spans 3 countries and we all come from different walks of life, Dragonworks brings people together who normally wouldn't be in the same room. And I've become a better person for it.
If any of this resonates with you, I recommend giving Dragonworks a try.
Well enough,

Howdy! I have been a part of Asura team since it's inception almost 9 months ago. I have been a part of many different campaigns, and most of them have required payment to play. Not only is payment not required, (Dragon works offers free quests which are tons of fun!) but I actually prefer paying, knowing that I'll be in a group with other dedicated players. This is easily my favorite campaign I've ever played in.
On that note, let's talk about my DM. I don't know if I'm allowed to say his name, but I absolutely would have a beer with him if we lived on the same continent. The man is an incredible guy, and a great DM. Every session is an adventure, and it's clear DragonWorks does their homework when it comes to session prep. I would quite literally take a bullet for my DM if necessary. My in game character, a sarcastic Rogue, definitely wouldn't, but I as a player would.
27/10 would recommend DragonWorks. Hannu is incredibly understanding, and it's clear he's got a good head on his shoulders. Thank you DragonWorks 🙏
I've joined Dragon Works less than a year ago, I've never played tabletops before nor did I have any idea on how to play 5e.
The community is extremely friendly, patient and helpful, I've started with the free quests to learn the ropes and had a very positive experience. So much so that I actually joined the paid campaign.
The world is solidly built and well written, the stories are engaging and you feel part o something big. But what I respect the most is how professional Hannu is, he's very friendly and responsive, he takes feedback seriously and acts immediately and genuinely cares and actively seeks constructive criticism and operates on values that are both fair and favorable to the player.
Verben is the main person responsible for 5e content and he is extremely knowledgeable, approachable and fair, he is really interested in what you have to suggest regarding certain systems , and you know with him around things will be balanced and fun mechanically.
The DMs -generally speaking- are friendly and enthusiastic, and are patient to a fault.
In the spirit of honesty and transparency, you may encounter a hiccup or find places that may need strengthening, but as I stated before Hannu almost never sleeps on a complaint and will promptly attempt to resolve any issue (personal experience) , but to be fair we must remember that this is human driven experience and perfection is unattainable.
Highly recommend testing waters with the free quests, and if you like them stay for the long haul.
I've only recently started playing DnD, after waiting to get into it for many years but never having a group to play with. I initally found a different paid group to join, and whilst the initial experience was fun, I definately got thrown in at the deep end! I played just two games on that server before leaving, slightyl disheartened.
I saw this thread for the Legacy of Alabasta campaign and was immediately intrigued. Not only was there a variety of open games and suitable times, but it offered the ability to start a brand new, and custom campaign,
I've been playing since early 2022, and have had an absolute blast in every game. I've had the pleasure of playing under a few different DM's, in the paid campaign and the free one-shots that are regularly run on the servers.
I encountered an issues where my current DM could not carry on our campaign, and Hannu and DW were quick to ensure they resolved the issue, placing me in a different group. I did not gel well with the new group, and again DW offered me a place in a couple of other campaigns, explaining each DM's particular styles. Current group is amazing, DM is fantastic.
The community is extremely welcoming, and discourse on discord is quickly stamped out to create an inclusive and friendly environment.
I'm currently level 6, having an amazing time, and I look forward every week to my Sunday game with a great bunch of players.
I would recommend Dragonworks to anyone (even tried to rope my wife in!).
Jumping into my 3rd campaign ever and first paid campaign, the good people over at Dragonworks made the experience perfect. The team is very knowledgeable, very willing to teach newcomers, and the amount of effort they put into the custom campaign shows. My wife and I looked forward attending every week and I recommend the experience to all skill levels.

Pros
Outstanding DMs
Well organized groups
Constant support with characters and very concise character creation rules.
Exceptionally developed lore with great art
A unique Integrated card system that can make insane things possible and often hilarious.
Cons
No free feat at level one
Mileage with house rules can vary
Rex Lex is still going strong!
So the time I have had in Dragonworks as been pretty amazing so far. The DM just had us fight a really interesting boss and great rp all around us. I would highly recommend the community and the dungeon masters here.
Awesome review! Thanks Nardlerd! If there's anything you need, let me know!
Salute,
Hannu
11/10 IGN Joined the campaign a year ago and loving it still. Love the campaigns you've been making and can't wait to see what goodies you've got in store in this one. Always had fun in your games and from what I've heard of the stuff you and your crew have been putting into this one then I feel like it'll be great. One of the best gm's I've had the pleasure of being under.
Beerfiends funny adventures in Legacy of Alabastar:
"Dear Diary, I am happy to announce my ability to cross the following things of my bucket list:
--Biting a goddess
--Winning a Dance contest as a member of 2 oppressed minorities as the same time, receiving further improvements to my epic squat dancing skillz!
--Getting extremely fabulous anime protagonist hair laced with carnivorous plants that destroy swarms on account of a raw wild mana surge
--Winning a Rap-Battle with an undead horse
--Outdrinking an entire garrison of slavers"
Hi, everyone!
I like it.
"Well Met" current and prospective adventurers,
A bit of background on myself.
