As the party hitches up the three remaining horses, the individuals with more map sense will point out that Thundertree is a big detour away from Phandalin.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cragmaw Castle to Phandalin = 7 hexes. 1 hex = 5 miles ie: 35 miles The party can travel 24 miles per 10 hours, leaving 8 hours to rest and 6 hours to set up camp, cook, eat, hunt, etc..
The party rolls into Phandalin during the evening of the second day. Most of the shops are closing. The Stonehill Inn remains open to travelers.
Leek, Kitryn, Elila and Rindelk remember the Inn keeper goes by the name of Toblen Stonehill. The Stonehill Inn offers modest rooms and meals for 8sp per day. There are a couple higher quality rooms that go for 13sp per day.
The Inn is full of the usual locals, all gossiping. Sildar Hallwinter is at the Inn, drinking ale at a table with some locals.
(We can do role play stuff in Phandalin for the next couple weeks. Buy/Sell, talk, listen to rumors, sort out what is going on, etc... Please don't feel obliged to post until after the holidays. We'll pick up with the story again after the new year.)
Katerielle will knock the mud from her boots. If there are coat hooks she will hang her quivers, longbow, and crossbow followed by her cloak over them. She will adjust her hair, taking it out of it's tied pony tail. She takes a moment to adjust the way her hair falls.
Walking to the bar she addresses it's tender, "I would like one of your better rooms, a bath if you can arrange one, and a glass of mulled warm spiced wine, please." She takes out and sets 3 gold coins on the bar top.
Toblen nods to Katerielle and replies, "Our best rooms include baths and food for a day and will run you 13sp. A pitcher of wine will cost 2sp." I'll have the boys bring your things - and he points at the gear you hung up - to your room. He drops 5 silver on the bar and pushes them and one of your gold coins back at you.
"Hope your mission was a success?" He prods, hoping for news and gossip.

"Not entirely. Could you let me know when the bath is ready?" Katerielle waits for a reply or acknowledgement about the bath then turns with a forced smile and walks to the table Sildar Hallwinter is at.
"Would you mind if I joined you until my room is ready?" Not entirely waiting for a reply, she takes a seat at the table and looks Sildar over for a minute.
Perception 23 and Insight 15. She is trying tell what kind of person he is and what kind of mood he is in for a baseline.
(Nice Rolls. Here's the module's description of Sildar.)
Sildar Hallwinter is a kindhearted human male of nearly fifty years who holds a place of honor in the famous griffon cavalry of the great city of Waterdeep. He is an agent of the Lords’ Alliance, a group of allied political powers concerned with mutual security and prosperity. Members of the order ensure the safety of cities and other settlements by proactively eliminating threats by any means, while bringing honor and glory to their leaders and homelands.
When you entered the Inn, Sildar seemed to be jovially conversing with some of the locals. As you walk up to his table and take a seat, he glances around looking for someone before making eye contact. He seems hopeful, but anxious. He speaks to you, "I am gladdened to see you returned and alive. Have you news of Cragmaw Castle, or Gundren?"
Everyone knows at least something about the Lords' Alliance:
The Lords’ Alliance is an association of rulers from cities and towns across Faerûn (primarily in the North), who believe that solidarity is needed to keep evil at bay. The rulers of Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Neverwinter, and other free cities dominate the coalition, and all lords in the Alliance work primarily for the fate and fortune of their individual settlements.
Alliance agents include sophisticated bards, zealous paladins, talented mages, and grizzled warriors. They are chosen primarily for their loyalty and are experts in observation, stealth, innuendo, and combat. Backed by the wealthy and the privileged, they carry fine equipment (often disguised to appear common), including large numbers of scrolls scribed with spells of communication.
Agents of the Lords’ Alliance ensure the safety and prosperity of civilized Faerûn by standing united against the forces that threaten civilization. They proactively eliminate such threats by any means, fighting with pride for the glory and security of their people, and for the lords who rule over them. However, Alliance operatives are often glory hounds, looking to gain a leg up on their counterparts from other Alliance cities. The leaders of the Alliance know that the order will survive only if its members support each other, requiring a balance between pride and diplomacy. Rogue agents within the Lords’ Alliance are rare, but defections have been known to occur.
(( OOC: I wasnt here at the begining.. are the redbrands still here? ))
OOC: The party has already defeated and dispersed the Redbrands. Glasstaff, aka: Iarno Albrek was killed by the party along with most of the ruffians. Any surviving ruffians would have fled or been pushed out of the town. Rindelk currently wields Iarno's glass staff.
Iarno Albrek was originally sent to Phandalin to establish a foot hold for the Lords' Alliance, but turned given the opportunity provided to him by the 'Black Spider' and created the Redbrands. Sildar Hallwinter was chagrined to hear of the defection and the death of his once ally, and has now taken up the task himself.
"We do. The castle ruins were filled with goblinoids led by a bugbear chieftain who fancied himself a king. It seems the king works for this mysterious spider, but the king wants more. The king wants to trade Gundren for a ransom of gold." Katerielle will inform Sildar while watching his reactions.
Leek will look for an empty table, preferably in a quiet area of the inn and will sit there with Droop. He will order food for him and Droop, (let me know how much) and then he will discuss with Droop the current arrangement of master and servant. He will discuss his role and what his expectations of him are. Basically he will carry supplies, aid our new cook in making meals and scavenge for herbs, and aid in scouting when necessary. If he does all his tasks well he will be rewarded with good food and praise.

Sildar looks concerned. "Gundren is alive then. That is a silver lining at the very least. How much gold does this bugbear king want in ransom?"
Let's not forget Droop GM. After I'm done helping the others bury and burn I will go make sure he and the horses are okay.
Leek votes for Phandalin. The right thing to do would be to inform the other guy. And maybe he would know what the map leads to...

I agree with Phandalin to restock and talk to Gundren's associate.
