Ichep shield was stowed during the conversation, so I think he would have it still stowed at the beginning of the encounter. Getting it out is probably the first thing he will do though lol
@Sundial, Balen took the kuo-toa's shield to complete the look of his kuo-toa disguise. Will he begin this encounter with the shield donned, simply carried, or stowed?
Hmmm... I would say the shield is simply carried

((what do I roll here? for range I substituted with shortbow and got 2 + 2 = 4 uhhh with Strength: check I got 12 + 2 = 14 Damage??? (I rolled with Sneak Attack and got 5) sorry idk ))
It will be a ranged attack with an improvised weapon.
On a hit, improvised weapons do 1d4 damage (in this case, bludgeoning). And then because oil flasks have a writeup that expands on what happens after a hit ... those things happen as well (namely, get coated in oil, this oil will dry after one minute, extra 5 fire damage if creature takes fire damage before oil dries).
Two minor corrections:
-Sneak attack is not applicable due to this ranged attack since the ranged attack must be made at disadvantage (the disadvantage is due to lack of proficiency with improvised weapons).
-Using a STR mod for this attack is not applicable because the weapon does not have the thrown property, so that means the default attribute used for ranged attacks (DEX) takes precedence.
So the ranged attack would look like this: 1d20+DEX(disadv), 1d4 bludgeoning damage on a hit and get coated in oil.

I rolled a 1d20 and got an 11 and 1 oops looks like it completely failed lol and the damage was 3
Good idea to try and torch the spiders. Aim we'll so you don't get me. :)
haha thank you! I thought it would have been good but with these rolls yikessssss Looks like there's gonna be no good aim here. I bet Balen's gonna set himself on fire ahahaha

A little bit of strategery: let's not be too hasty to get to the devil. If this spider swarm is what I think it is, it's capable of one-shotting any of us, so my suggestion would be to gang up on it first.
Prescient words from the paladin. :(
A swarm of spiders does 4d4 piercing damage on a hit, but the damage drops to 2d4 piercing damage if the creature is at or below half of its hit point maximum. The swarm had been damaged to within 3hp of having its damage output reduced, and then, adding insult to injury ... when it rolled its first attack ... it rolled a 20. This critical hit turned the 4d4 piercing damage into 8d4 piercing damage and Faen succumbed to the massive damage clause after being brought to 0hp remaining (namely ... that if the excess damage after being brought to 0hp remaining is equal to or exceeds your maximum hit points, the attack results in the death of the character).
Entering the fight with 10/10hp, Faen could have survived up to and including a 19hp attack ... but the 8d4 attack unfortunately resulted in 21hp damage.

Darn. Well, I guess I get an excuse to write a sad death entry in the IC posts.
As far as next character, I'll probably do Wizard.
Oh no. Definitely not glad about that "prediction". Sorry, man. West Marches campaigns are especially tough about that, and the RNG gods don't smile on us first-levelers.
Make something else cool, and come back soon! We need your help!
Eradin (Rinn) Siannodel He/Him. High Elf. Wizard 1. Outlander.
Backstory (Very Rough Outline): He grew up in an elven city, but had an urge for adventure and explore. He had an itch that he felt confined in the often-stuffy Elvish society. TODO: What was the city called? What about his family? Did he have siblings that would still be looking for him?
Decided to leave home early in life. Searched out a group of wandering wizards, joining with them to learn to be a mage. TODO: What finally was the event that made him decide to leave? What was the group called? What was life like with these wandering wizards? Who was his primary mentor? Where is the mentor now?
Now that he's graduated beyond being a simple apprentice, he must now venture into the world, using the lessons he's learned, and search for new arcane secrets. TODO: What has he experienced thus far on his adventures? What brings him to Havenford?
Also, I accidentally rolled for Chromatic Orb, so that's what happened for the random roll in the campaign log.

I'm glad that mine did not come true and I'm still there, but as them Russians say "It's not evening yet".
Also, I join a PbP game, and suddenly I'm being practically force-fed forum titles. Randomly got 12 new titles after my last post.
The additional titles are connected to a forum member's total post count, I believe.

Well I can try to give him head lice
And bonks on the head! Never forget the bonks.
Hmmm... I would say the shield is simply carried

Round summary has been posted, gang. The dice were not kind.
The swarm of spiders rolled a critical hit against Faen, and the bard succumbed to his wounds.
@Samhain, your character has died and you are more than welcome to create a new character to play in this tale. Starting experience will be 270XP.

Here is a new character. Hopefully he'll last longer, but he'll be a bit more vulnerable (clothy characters at low levels, am I right?)

Yoinked the silver shortsword. Added it with the name Silver Blade 'Faen' in my inventory.
