an NPC named Seva, hired us to go to this town to overthrow the evil noble who is running the town, the party was a bit skeptical and wanted to see for ourselves what was going on, we ran into some bandits on the way there and dealt with them. we managed to persuade our way into the town and that's about it. 

edit: also, the party is all friends, and our collective backstory is we fought off a bunch of raiders/slavers who attacked a town we all happened to be in. (or something along those lines i think.)

Got it! Right after I posted that I found the part about the job.

I think we can tie Therion into that backstory as he did work for a militia after sometime on the streets. Maybe I wasn’t with your group but Therion could definitely be in the militia during that time. Do we have a name for this town yet? I’m realizing a lot of freedom in building this world together with the DM.

I think EmperorKarino already gave you the scoop on what the party is trying to do. A quick summary:

Deepacre, a small mining town in the southern reaches of The Anvil, discovered some kind of vault. Shortly after, Lord Autar Blackwood swooped in and annexed the town as part of his territory. A young woman named Seva recruited the party in Southaven to come to Deepacre and free it from Lord Blackwood.

So, they group is in Deepacre are about to enter The Old Hag, a tavern in the center of town. There’s some kind of ruckus there.

I’d like to place our new characters so we can get them in on the game ASAP. My initial thought was to have the new characters as separate group traveling together by happenstance as they came into Deepacre days ago. I think I’d like the new characters to already be in the tavern when the party enters.

What are your thoughts? I’m open to other ideas, as well.

I was thinking, as abounty hunter, Therion heard of Blackwood from one of the other riders that were sent out for help, since you said there were four. He would want to check it out and see if it is worth his trouble. He is already in the tavern.

Khinsrra could be in tavern, recently arrived from his homeland, far in the east. He is eaten a piece of meal, not cooked, in one shady table of the hag. 

It's this ok? 

If there's a brawl, Neona is probably sitting in a corner watching and laughing uncontrollably with her big mastiff Luna either sleeping at her feet, or barking at people that get too close.

Ok... Now that we all leveled up, here comes a few questions I need answers to.

Does our level up abilities start as soon as we level up? For example, Elery receives a new spell at third level and one additional spell slot, should I actually already have both of them right now? Asking because one of my other games had us get our additional HP as soon as we leveled up, but our abilities only when we completed a long rest.

Also, is HP going to fixed or manual? I imagine I might already know the answer (the answer being that we can choose), but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Super good questions and sorry I didn’t point them out when I said level. I like keeping it more pulpy and action-y. So, as long as you’re not in the middle of combat, dice rolls, or some critical danger, you level immediately. That’s new HP gained added to your current totals, new abilities are gained, new spells gained, and new spell slots.

As for HP, you get these options:

1. Take the average listed in the class
2. Roll it as normal
3. Play “yours and mine”

”Yours and mine” is a game where you roll your HP and I roll the same die secretly. You have to choose to take your roll or my roll, even though you don’t know what I rolled.

I think I'll go with the third option... I like my odds.

Edit: Well... That was quick. DM, I already chose if I'll take mine or yours, you don't even need to roll.

my hit point type is set to fixed, do i still have to do one of those three options?

Mine was also set to fix and I changed to manual... If you want to change to manual you can, if not, you'll automatically be having the first option, because the Fixed HP calculation is the same thing as the Average HP.

Yeah, it’s totally up to you guys. “Fixed”, like Pertuie said, is basically giving you average every level.
