I plan to run Lore of Lurue from Candlekeep Mysteries. The short adventure is designed for 4-6 Level 8 characters. My players will be creating Level 8 characters from scratch.
Does the following equipment, gold, magic items, and feats per characterseem reasonable?
- All nonmagical armor, weapons, adventuring gear, and tools allowed (within reason in terms of carrying capacity, backpack size, etc.)
- 2 common magic items, 2 uncommon magic items, and 1 rare magic item (not including potions, scrolls, and other one-use items)
- 1 potion, scroll, or other one-use item (common or uncommon)
500 gp plus 1d10 × 25 gp, normal starting equipment
500 gp plus 1d10 × 25 gp, normal starting equipment
500 gp plus 1d10 × 25 gp, one uncommon magic item, normal starting equipment
11th–16th
5,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, one uncommon magic item, normal starting equipment
5,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, two uncommon magic items, normal starting equipment
5,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, three uncommon magic items, one rare item, normal starting equipment
17th–20th
20,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, two uncommon magic items, normal starting equipment
20,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, two uncommon magic items, one rare item, normal starting equipment
20,000 gp plus 1d10 × 250 gp, three uncommon magic items, two rare items, one very rare item, normal starting equipment
For Characters starting between 5th and 10th levels in the highest Magic campaigns they suggest somewhere between 525-750 gp, all normal starting equipment, and 1 uncommon magic item per PC including consumables. (WotC actually writes all of their rules assuming absolutely no magic items whatsoever, and no feats or Multiclassing either.)
Honestly, the gp is less than relevant most of the time unless there’s a Wiz who needs to scribe spells. And most players hoard consumable, so that’s less of a concern too. And most common magic items won’t affect encounter balance so those shouldn’t be a problem either. And they are entitled to their 4th & 8th level ASIs, and if you give everyone a free feat @ 1st then that’s fair (unless someone takes Variant Human and gets two?).
As long as you make the encounters significant harder to compensate for the additional firepower from the 2nd uncommon and the rare item, and the additional 1st level feat each them you should be fine.
