I am a new DM and I gave the go-ahead for one of my players to use the new UA Artificer Class. One of the first problems that arose is they fell in love with a version of the 2016 Artificers that had "Thunder Cannons". I put my foot down and said if they were going to playtest the Artificer they would have to use the latest build. After they agreed they put a Character Sheet together and then requested a Musket (They are trying to recreate the Thunder Cannon). I am on the fence about it. I looked up the stats and if they combine the Musket with the Infusion "Repeating Shot" It basically turns it into a Heavy Crossbow that ignores the loading time. My problem is, I know the Artificer is more of an Eberron class and the Musket is worth 500g (They are only level 4). I could justify saying no because of the Cost, but the Artificers stock and trade is this. I mean the character can build a turret that acts as a flamethrower, but a Musket would be hard to get a hold of/make? I am a little stuck. Suggestions?
Eh, it should be fine. Like you said, it's basically just a Heavy Crossbow and the character would have to invest in it to make it only slightly better than that. Honestly, in a lot of games I play or run, the reload drawback is often forgotten or ignored in the heat of battle anyway, so it's really not even that game-breaking a thing to have glossed over.
I'd say let them have it. It won't hurt anything and you'll likely get some good RP situation out of it, especially if they try to fire it in places where cave-ins are likely.

I agree with Metamongoose, the musket isn't even that great compared to a heavy crossbow from a pure combat point of view. It trades a lot of range for a bit more damage. Granted, it weighs less and can be used by small races, but still; it's not a clear improvement over the standard options.
I suspect the high price tag is there for worldbuilding purposes.

Thank you. I think that makes sense.
