Due to some really crazy (bad) rolls and bad tactics the PC's barely even slowed down the Drow Gunslingers during my Autumn run of Chapter 4 of Dragon Heist, and they easily got to the docks and away on Big Belchy with the Stone of Golorr! Out of the 4 PC's two ended up going down and one almost bled out - those pistol shots are horrendously painful - took out the lvl 4 sorcerer with one shot!
So now Jarlaxle has the stone - although they don't know it's Jarlaxle, but they suspect it might be.
I can't think of any reason that now he has the stone he would get the PC's involved again.
I don't know what they're going to do next - They think that Laeral has asked them to get the stone, but of course that was actually Jarlaxle in disguise, so there's no reason for the real Laeral to get in touch - I hope they go and try and talk with her, but they'll have a bunch of bureaucracy to get through to even get to see her, as she has no idea who they are. If they go back to the Seven Masks Theater they'll get nowhere - Jarlaxle has no reason to be there.
They may turn to the Blackstaff, but she knows nothing of the stone directly, and doesn't really care since it poses no direct threat to Waterdeep, plus she's hardly on good terms with Laeral anyway!
They may talk to Raener, but he couldn't really give a damn about his father's pilfered money.
The other factions are also not involved in the main story-line, so they have no knowledge of the stone other than through rumor, so I'm not sure how to get someone to suggest that they infiltrate Jarlaxle's flagship and try and steal the stone back!
Open to any suggestions before next Monday when the campaign continues.
Renaer is a member of the Harpers, and they would very much care about getting the gold back.
If Blackstaff helps the PCs recover the gold, that helps her stick it to Laeral. "You couldn't get it back, but I could"
You don't have to put bureaucracy in front of visiting the Open Lord. Also the Open Lord often wanders waterdeep in secrecy / disguise, so perhaps she overhears that the PCs want to talk with her, and then she surreptitiously visits trollskull?
Sure there’s a reason for the real Laeral to get involved. Jarlaxle is super-shady and she’s been keeping tabs on him. He’ll spot any of her better-known agents, but since he’s already suckered the players once, she thinks his ego will compel him to underestimate them if they make contact again. So she goes and explains things to them and offers to cut them in for a percentage if they get the stone back.
